Winning the US Open at a young age takes a lot of skill and determination.

The US Open is one of the four Grand Slams in tennis that requires immense preparation and skill to win. Over the years, several iconic players have won the singles category title, showing incredible hunger and drive to win. Winning the hard-court tournament at any age is remarkable, but winning it in your early 20s or teenage years is simply outstanding.

Over the years, in the Open Era of tennis, several young female athletes have won the US Open. The Grand Slam tournament attracts seasoned professionals with years of experience under their belt. Besting players who have more exposure and familiarity with the pressure is the type of stuff legends are made of.

Keeping the focus on the young female tennis stars, here is a look at the top five youngest players to win US Open women’s singles titles in the Open Era:

5. Emma Raducanu – 18 years, 9 months, 29 days

Emma Raducanu became the fifth youngest player to win the women’s singles title at the US Open after winning the category in 2021. Her achievement was even more shocking because she entered the main draw after winning the qualifiers. By defeating Leylah Fernandes in the final, she became the first qualifier, man or woman, to win a Grand Slam.

4. Serena Williams – 17 years, 11 months, 15 days

Before Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam winner, became a powerhouse in tennis and dominated the sport, she turned heads by winning the US Open at 17 years, 11 months, and 15 days old. Her win was iconic for several reasons, one of them being that she became the first African-American woman to win any Grand Slam singles title in the Open Era. She had to beat Martina Hingis in the final to achieve the trophy.

3. Monica Seles – 17 years, 9 months, 5 days

Monica Seles is the third youngest player to win the US Open women’s singles title. She won the competition in 1991 at the age of 17 years, 9 months, 5 days. This was her fourth Grand Slam title. She went on to win nine grand slam titles in her career and remains the youngest to win the French Open at the tender age of 16 years and six months.

2. Martina Hingis – 16 years, 11 months, 8 days

Martina Hingis started showing signs of greatest early on in her career. She won 25 major titles in her career that consisted of five major singles titles, 13 major women’s doubles titles, and seven major mixed doubles titles.

Her first US Open title came during the 1997 edition when she was 16 years, 11 months and 8 days old. Interestingly, she is the youngest ever player to win a Grand Slam singles title after winning the 1997 Australian Open at the age of 16 years and 3 months.

1. Tracy Austin – 16 years, 8 months, 28 days

Tracy Austin is the youngest player to win the women’s singles title at the US Open in the Open Era. The American athlete won the tournament in 1979 when she was just 16 years, 8 months, and 28 days old. She won the US Open in 1981 again and these two were the only instances when she won a Grand Slam title in women’s singles.
