Homegrown champ and 2019 winner Dominic Theim will say farewell at ATP Vienna Open 2024.

The Erste Bank Open, or the Vienna Open, is an indoor hard-court event on the ATP 500 calendar. Alexander Zverev headlines the Vienna-based event in its 50th edition. Austria’s very own Dominic Thiem will turn up to compete in his final outing as a tennis pro.

The title run in 2019 by Thiem at the Vienna Open over Diego Schwartzman saw him join countrymen Horst Skoff and Jurgen Melzer as Austrian winners at the home event. Kei Nishikori, the 2018 finalist, is also set to make an appearance in Vienna. Nishikori is a two-time champion at the Japan Open (2012 & 2014). Thiem and Nishikori have been given wildcards for the ATP 500 event.

Grigor Dimitrov, Alex de Minaur, Tommy Paul, Frances Tiafoe and Lorenzo Musetti are some of the other familiar names on the entry list.

In last season’s edition, Jannik Sinner defeated Medvedev 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-3 to clinch the Vienna Open singles title after three hours and four minutes – the longest that year. While Sinner won’t be turning up to defend his title, he is likely to make himself available for the Paris Masters later this month.

Sinner is perched comfortably at the top of the ATP Rankings, having sealed the year-ending No. #1 position during his 19th uninterrupted week in the top spot.

Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz, Peter Korda and Hubert Hurkacz are also missing from the lineup, with Korda and Hurkacz nursing injuries. Gael Monfils and Marcos Giron replaced Korda and Hurkacz, while Fabian Marozsan enters the main draw in place of Hurkacz.

Alex Michelsen takes Medvedev’s place in the main draw. The Russian, winner of the Vienna Open in 2022, is a last-minute withdrawal with pain in the right shoulder. Alex de Minaur moves up as the second seed in Medvedev’s absence.

Fritz is comfortably poised to finish the year in the ATP top 10 and is near certain to make his second ATP Finals appearance after making it to the 2022 edition. The top-ranked American is fifth in the Race to Turin.

Defending doubles champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury will not be returning to Vienna after the pair split up in September following a successful six-year partnership. The duo won three consecutive US Open titles between 2021 and 2023. This clears the decks for Indo-American duo and second seeds Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden to back themselves for a title run at the event.
