The Washington Open 2025 is set to crown a new champion as Anna Kalinskaya and Leylah Fernandez go head-to-head in the women’s singles final on Sunday night, July 27, in Washington, D.C.

This will perhaps be the biggest match of both players’ careers. Kalinskaya is chasing her first-ever WTA title, while Fernandez will be aiming to lift her first trophy of the season.

Leylah Fernandez reached the final with a three-tiebreak win over No. 3 seed Elena Rybakina, 6-7(2), 7-6(3), 7-6(3), in a battle that lasted 3 hours and 12 minutes. The Canadian is now in the hunt for her fourth WTA title, and if she wins it will mark her first trophy since Hong Kong 2023.

On the other hand, Anna Kalinskaya has reached two WTA finals before—at the WTA 1000 Dubai and WTA 500 Berlin—but is still searching for her maiden title.

However, the 26-year-old Russian has a strong record at the Washington Open as she holds a 9–2 main-draw win-loss record at the tournament and has reached the quarter-finals every time she played here. She even reached the semi-finals in 2019 as a qualifier ranked No. 160.

Still, it’s a tough battle for the world number 48, as she faces a higher ranked Fernandez (world no. 36), who claimed all her three WTA titles on hard courts.

Kalinskya and Fernandez have faced each other only once before at the Guadalajara in 2021, where the Canadian emerged victorious with the scoreline of 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 at the hard court.
