Twenty-four-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic is set to face Italian qualifier Francesco Maestrelli in the second round of the Australian Open 2026 on Thursday, January 22.
Djokovic began his quest for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title with a smooth 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over Pedro Martinez in the opening round.
With that victory, the Serb registered his 100th career win at the Australian Open, second only to Roger Federer (102) for the most match wins in Melbourne Park.
Maestrelli, meanwhile, has come through a long battle in qualifying rounds and produced one of most thrilling moments of his career so far in the first-round, defeating Terence Atmane in a five-set battle 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-1.
The match lasted two hours and 53 minutes and marked Maestrelli’s first-ever Grand Slam main-draw victory, a moment he described as “very, very emotional.”
Now, the 23-year-old Italian faces the toughest challenge of his career, coming up against the 10-time Australian Open champion in their first-ever meeting.
“They told me there was a chance to play Djokovic, and it will be one of the most exciting things of my life,” Maestrelli said ahead of the match.
“It’s crazy to see his name next to mine in an official match. I will try to do my best to win. I know it’s very difficult, but that’s tennis,” he added.
