Both players are unseeded, making this only the third time in the Open Era that two unseeded players will meet in the title match at WTA Canadian Open. The last time this happened was in 1979.

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, will aim for her first WTA 1000 title since returning from maternity leave, and her first title of the 2025 season. The Japanese star heads into the final after a strong 6-2, 7-6(7) win over Clara Tauson in the semis. In the quarter-finals, the former World No. 1 dominated Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-2.

Speaking of the Canadian rising star Mboko, the World No. 85 has thrilled home fans with her stunning run to the final. The 18-year-old upset World No. 12 Elena Rybakina 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 in the semi-final. Earlier, she defeated Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-4, 6-2 in the quarter-finals.

She is the first Canadian player to defeat three former singles Grand Slam champions in a single WTA event, with her wins over Rybakina, Coco Gauff and Sofia Kenin.
