Who is Leylah Fernandez dating? Canadian tennis star reveals her relationship status

Leylah Fernandez has won four WTA titles, including her first WTA 500 crown at Washington.

Leylah Fernandez’s Washington Open 2025 title victory was extraordinary in itself — her fourth WTA title and first-ever WTA 500 crown. But what followed it turned out to be just as surprising, and perhaps even more talked about, than her performance on the court.

After the biggest win of her career, the 22-year-old Canadian tennis star made an unusual request on social media. She invited fans to text her for the chance to go on a one-hour date in Montreal.

“I’ve never been on one date before,” Leylah Fernandez admitted. “So I just wanted to experience how it goes from there.”

Her inbox was instantly bombarded with messages from fans from all around the globe. Many were willing to fly in from other countries to meet her, but Fernandez decided to keep things simpler and safer, no travel fatigue for anyone.

She narrowed her search to someone local, and then, with help from her family and team, verified the identity of the people she might go with.

Ironically, her Canadian Open run ended abruptly with a first-round loss to Australia’s Maya Joint, 4-6, 6-1. This gave Leylah plenty of time for her off-court experiment.

One of the DMs uniquely caught her attention. “I was giving it one more day, and then I stumbled upon him. His message caught my attention somewhat. When I asked him, ‘Did you even see my video?’ he said, ‘No, I didn’t.’ That made me curious,” Fernandez told Tennis Channel.

It’s not safe to trust people online, so Fernandez got her family involved to make sure everything was okay and safe. “Afterwards, I stalked him to make sure that he’s real. He’s a real person, seemed like a nice guy, and then got a couple of opinions from family, team members, to make sure that they were okay with it,” she said.

She admitted to “stalking” his profile to make sure he was genuine. Once she confirmed he was real, she agreed to the date.

How was the date?

“I had a good time with the guy. He was funny, and he is nice. There’s even been a second date, and we’re keeping in contact, so we’ll see,” Leylah Fernandez said with a smile.

I told my date that we might have to push it back a little bit,” she added.

For Fernandez, it was a lighthearted and memorable break from the intensity of the tennis season. The experiment has now sparked a wave of fan curiosity.
