Five reasons why India failed to win medal in tennis at Asian Games 2026
India’s tennis campaign at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya ended without a medal.
Sumit Nagal‘s 4-6, 4-6 quarter-final loss to China’s Yibing Wu was the final nail in the coffin, and for the first time since 1986, India will return empty-handed from the Asiad in tennis.

India had won a tennis medal at every edition since 1990, and at least two were expected this time. However, some shocking results have raised alarming questions over the future of Indian tennis. Let’s take a look at what went wrong in this edition.
Over-reliance on a struggling Sumit Nagal
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
India’s singles hopes rested almost entirely on Nagal, and he arrived in poor form. He lost all four of his Davis Cup singles matches this year, two against the Netherlands and two recently against South Korea. He admitted he was physically a notch below Kwon Soon-woo in Seoul.
He lost a three-set match to Hyeon Chung after leading 4-0 in the first set, and Kwon beat him 6-1, 6-2 in the match that sealed the tie. The slide has shown in his ranking too. He is placed at around 251 currently, a long way from the top-70 level he touched in 2024.
In Japan the pattern repeated. Nagal was the last Indian left in the medal race, and he went out in straight sets once he met a quality opponent in Wu. He is 29 right now, and will be 33 when Doha hosts the 2030 Games. India cannot keep leaning on him.
Doubles failed to deliver
Doubles was meant to be the safety net. India had the top seeds and the fifth seeds in men’s doubles and the second seeds and fourth seeds in mixed doubles. None of them reached the podium. Both men’s pairs fell at the quarter-final stage.
Yuki Bhambri and Dhakshineswar Suresh lost in straight sets. Top seeds Anirudh Chandrasekar and N Sriram Balaji lost the match in the deciding tie-break. The mixed pairing of Bhambri and Rutuja Bhosale also went out against a tough Taipei team.

These are experienced players, and Bhambri has played at the highest level, including a semi-final appearance at the US Open. The competition in the men’s doubles field was modest, at best, which makes it even harder to accept the result.
Lack of depth in women’s tennis
India has had no top female player since Sania Mirza. The mismatch in quality showed in Nagoya, where India did not field a single player in women’s singles. The only women’s doubles pair India sent also lost in the first round.
A system that starts failing at the grassroots
The problem begins at the bottom. India produces very few players who make the step from junior to senior tennis. Academies are costly, and the ones with quality coaching sit primarily in top metro cities.
Players who do not get enough competition early come into the senior circuit late. Many of them also lack the physical conditioning to handle a week of back-to-back matches.
Rohan Bopanna’s retirement has left a gap in leadership and in big-match experience. The Davis Cup tie in Seoul showed how much the team lacks in tactics as well. South Korea prepared a slow, low-bounce court to blunt Nagal’s topspin and Suresh’s serve, and the Indian players were caught underprepared.
From once being an Asian powerhouse in tennis to now being overshadowed in the discipline by countries like China, South Korea, Japan and Chinese Taipei, the decline of Indian tennis is a subject that can no longer be ignored. Questions will be asked, and necessary action must be taken to ensure the revival of tennis in the country.
