Wimbledon Day Two: Federer, Barty progress into the second round
Women's star Serena Williams retired from the tournament due to injury on Tuesday.
Frenchman Adrian Mannarino’s retirement in the deciding set made things easier for Roger Federer as the Swiss progressed into the second round of Wimbledon 2021 after an intense four set battle.
The score of 6-4, 6-7, 3-6, 6-2, 0-0(15/0) clearly suggests that the match was turning into a real spectacle before Mannarino’s withdrawal. He suffered a fall in the fourth set and that caught up to him in the fifth set. The retirement meant that Federer, an eight-time Wimbledon champion, progressed to the next round.
Star American Serena Williams also suffered an injury scare in the first round of the tournament. The 23-time Grand Slam champion withdrew after receiving an injury in the first round against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The score stood at 3-3.
Kerber, Barty progress
Top-seeded Ashleigh Barty needed three sets to move to the second round. After winning the first set 6-1, the Australian lost the second set in the tie-breaker against Carla Suarez Navarro. Barty, however, showed her superior skill by repeating her first set scoreline to claim the victory.
2018 Wimbledon Champion Angelique Kerber also progressed to the second round. The German beat Slovakian Nina Stojanovic in straight sets to progress. The three-time Grand Slam winner won her first round tie by a score of 6-4, 6-3.

Dutch star Arantxa Rus was at the receiving end of a Maria Sakkari show, succumbing 1-6, 1-6. Belgian participant Mertens also won in straight sets 6-1,6-3 against Harriet Dart.
Gasquet, Zverev breeze through
Former World No. 7 Richard Gasquet made short work of Yuichi Sugita in his first round tie. The Frenchman won 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 against his Japanese opponent to progress into the next round of Wimbledon.

2020 US Open finalist Alexander Zverev defeated his Dutch opponent Tallon Griekspoor in an one-sided affair. The German won 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 in straight sets to end the Dutch star’s hopes of a comeback. Zverev dominated with his serve, scoring 20 points through aces compared to three from his opponent.
Denis Shapovalov also progressed beating his German counterpart Philipp Kohlschreiber in a tough five-set encounter. The 10th Seeded Canadian star won 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in a tense and grueling affair.
World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev needed four sets to progress to the next round. The Russian beat Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 in an entertaining match and began his campaign on a positive note.
