Top five men's singles players to watch out for at Wimbledon 2021

The tournament returns after a year's gap due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wimbledon is just a few days away and all tennis-lovers are eagerly waiting for the third Grand Slam of the year. Considered the grandest of the Grand Slams, the tournament has always been a special affair for players and spectators alike.

It will be even more special for the athletes as it is returning after a year's gap. Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic had ruled out the tournament completely. Now, Novak Djokovic returns to the All England Club, as he prepares to defend his title.

Let's take a look at some of the players we need to keep a close eye on during the tournament. These stars can make a strong claim to the title.

5. Roberto Bautista Agut

Roberto Bautista Agut could be the dark-horse at Wimbledon this year. The eighth seeded Spaniard was a semi-finalist in the previous edition of the tournament. He went down fighting against Djokovic in their four-set encounter.

Agut has also been very consistent on the grass court with a win percentage of 71, so this might be his breakout moment. He also has nine ATP singles title wins out of 18 appearances. Moreover, his record against top players also speaks volumes about his talent. This is especially so against the likes of Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem. His win-loss record stands at 3-0 and 4-1 respectively against the two.

4. Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev can also be a player who might make his way to his first Grand Slam title this year. The Russian has already been at the losing end of two Grand Slam finals. The last one came recently in this year's Australian Open. He would be desperate to win his first Grand Slam.

Medvedev is in good touch and though his performances at Wimbledon have not been up to his standards, the Russian is a good player to bet on. Moreover, his victories over the top three ATP players in 2020 speak for themselves. The tennis world and particularly the whole of Russia would be cheering him on when he steps onto the grass courts of Wimbledon.

3. Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas has had a great run at Grand Slams this year. The Greek made it to the semi-finals at the Australian Open and the final in the French Open. The latter being his best career performance to-date.

The third seed will definitely look to ride on that momentum at Wimbledon, hunting for his maiden Grand Slam title. The first round exit in the 2019 edition of the tournament is a distant memory he would like to forget. Tsitsipas has already established himself as one the greatest tennis players in Greek history.

He is the only Greek player to play in the final of a Grand Slam. He would like to draw inspiration from his five-set marathon against Novak Djokovic in the French Open final.

2. Roger Federer

Roger Federer is undeniably the undisputed 'King of Grass.' The Swiss is the proud holder of eight Wimbledon titles. Federer was so dominant in his prime that he won five consecutive Wimbledon titles from 2003-2007.

Even now when 'Fed Express' has reached the twilight of his career, his magic on grass is still undiminished. The final of the last Wimbledon is a prime example of that. Federer took Djokovic to his limits in a 4 hour 57 minute marathon.

Age might be catching up with him, but it can be clearly said that the Swiss is still a cut above the rest on the grass courts of Wimbledon.

1. Novak Djokovic

Last but not least, the defending champion. The man whos will go up against tough opposition to defend his crown - Novak Djokovic. The Serbian is a five-time Wimbledon champion. He has won two in a row as well. A victory this year would complete a hat-trick for 'The Djoker.'

Moreover, it will also be a hat-trick of Grand Slam titles in a calendar year. The No. 1 seed has already bagged the Australian Open and French Open titles. On top of that, the man from Belgrade has won five out of his last six Wimbledon finals. So, if everything goes as planned, we can see him on the winner's podium again.
