The Spaniard was pushed to his limits in the quarter-final.
The 2022 Wimbledon Championships are reaching the final stages. As the tournament approaches the business end, the fans are treated to absolutely breathtaking tennis action. The forthcoming days will see the cream of the crop taking the stage, or the grass court rather. On Wednesday, one of the favourites to win the Men’s Singles, Rafael Nadal was in action. The second seed found it tough to win his quarter-final contest against Taylor Fritz of the United States of America.
The Spaniard had to come back into the match after losing two sets to the 24-year-old. Fritz looked set to cause a huge upset after winning two of the first three sets. However, displaying his usual determination and an unshaken will, Nadal went on to win the game by 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (10-4). The contest took four hours and 21 minutes to finish, thereby thoroughly entertaining the crowd at the Centre Court. Thanks to the win, the 22-time Grand Slam winner made his way into the semi-final. He keeps the hope of a ‘calendar slam’ alive, which is winning all four Grand Slams in a calendar year.
Dream Shattered For Sania Mirza
Sania Mirza of India and Mate Pavic of Croatia lost their semi-final clash to Neal Skupski of the United Kingdom and Desirae Krawczyk of the United States of America. In a difficult clash against the second seeds, the sixth seeds lost in three sets after an exhausting two hours and 16 minutes outing.
In the end, the legendary Indian tennis star and her partner lost the tie by a 6-4, 5-7, 4-6 score. This was Sania Mirza’s last-ever appearance at Wimbledon as she will retire at the end of the year. Her dreams of winning the Wimbledon in Mixed Doubles came to an end after coming so close but remaining ever so far. Having said that, Mirza leaves the competition with one win in Women’s Doubles back in 2015.
