Carlos Alcaraz is aiming to retain his Wimbledon title this year.
Defending Champion and third seed Carlos Alcaraz will look to continue his fine run at Wimbledon 2024, as he goes up against the 29th-seeded Frances Tiafoe in the third round.
Although the 21-year-old Spaniard was made to sweat a tad bit in the first two rounds, he is yet to drop a set. He started off with a 7-6(3) 7-5 6-2 victory against Estonian qualifier Mark Lajal. He then defeated Australian Aleksandar Vukic 7-6(5) 6-2 6-2 in the second round. Alcaraz will be looking to motor on and replicate his performance from last year.
His 26-year-old American opponent, though, has had a far from comfortable start to the tournament. He defeated WR #35 Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the first round, coming back from two sets down and winning 6-7(5) 2-6 6-1 6-3 6-3. The second round proved to be a much more comfortable proposition, defeating Croatian Borna Coric 7-6(5) 6-1 6-3. He will now have to contend with one of the finest players on the circuit currently, in the third round.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Frances Tiafoe preview
Carlos Alcaraz has already been projected to be one of the greats. He has won one Grand Slam on each surface: US Open 2022 (hardcourt), Wimbledon 2023 (grass) and the French Open 2024 (clay). Mind you, he is just 21! Last year, the former world number #1 had stunned the world, by coming back from a set down to defeat Serb legend Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final.
The Spaniard did not start off 2024 very well, with some relatively early exits. After being on the sidelines due to an ankle sprain, he won the Indian Wells on his return — his first title since the Wimbledon triumph. Alcaraz then shrugged off a shaky start to the clay season amid more injury concerns, winning his first-ever French Open title.

His preparation on grass too was inauspicious, losing to Brit Jack Draper in the second round at the ATP London. But the third seed would be happy to have got some crucial momentum going into the third round here.
On the other hand, Tiafoe has been relatively more comfortable on hardcourt. His best performance at the Wimbledon came two years ago, where he managed to reach the fourth round. Form too hasn’t been on his side this year, having made multiple early exits.
The American crashed out in the second round at the Australian Open and the French Open. His grass court season too didn’t start off well, with a quarter-final defeat (against Draper) at Stuttgart and then a first-round exit in London.
Coming back from two sets down to win the first round here at Wimbledon against a quality opponent like Arnaldi, Tiafoe has reminded the world of his quality. While such wins drain your body, they boost you mentally. Tiafoe had broken into the top 10 last year, with some very impressive performances.
His game on clay and grass has improved a lot, with him winning a title on each of these surfaces last year. While his rankings did slump, Tiafoe would be keen to prove that he can still compete with the best.
It is worth noting that the Spaniard’s first Grand Slam title was the US Open 2022, while the American’s best finish at a Grand Slam was in the same tournament. A gruelling five-setter had ensued between the two in the semi-final, with Alcaraz coming out trumps.

Prediction
Carlos Alcaraz is one of the contenders to win the title this year, along with first seed Italian Jannik Sinner and second seed Novak Djokovic. He has an all-round game, suited for every kind of court. Former World Number #1 Mats Wilander had declared that Alcaraz has the “greatest forehand of all time”. That, combined with his disguised drop shot, makes him exceptionally lethal.
On the other hand, Tiafoe hasn’t had much success recently. Tiafoe possess a very strong forehand too. Just like his American compatriots like John Isner and Sam Querrey, he too possesses a big serve. Tiafoe is known to play aggressively, and he will have to make sure to not show signs of passivity, in order to keep Alcaraz on the backfoot.
While Tiafoe does have the experience of playing in big matches, he will have to put up a Herculean effort to pose a stiff challenge to Alcaraz
Result: Carlos Alcaraz to win in straight sets.
