For a second year running, Daniil Medvedev faced a semi-final exit from Wimbledon at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz.

Daniil Medvedev suffered a second straight semi-final exit at Wimbledon after going down to defending champion Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(1), 3-6, 4-6, 4-6 in a three-hour long match. Medvedev had also lost to Alcaraz at the same stage last year, albeit in straight sets.

However, prior to losing the match, the fifth seed lost his composure and had a massive quarrel with the chair umpire, Eva Asderaki. After taking an early 3-1 lead in the first set, Medvedev bettered his position in the match to go 5-2 up. However, Alcaraz was able to hold and break back, taking the score to 5-4.

Serving for the set, Medvedev—2021 US Open Champion—was 30-40 down facing a breakpoint, when the third seed put in a delicate drop shot. Despite the Russian being convinced that he got to the ball before it bounced for the second time, the chair umpire thought otherwise and handed the point in favour of Alcaraz.

Consumed with anger and fury, Medvedev went on to say a few inappropriate words to the Greek umpire. The situation soon appeared extremely serious when the umpire came down from her chair to consult with the tournament advisor, about whether his words deserved just a warning or something more severe. Ultimately, the verdict was a warning for his unsportsmanlike conduct.

Later in the match, zoomed up slow motions showed that the ball had indeed bounced twice, proving the chair umpire’s decision right. What could have resulted in a direct disqualification for the Russian, was limited to an official warning.

Although Medvedev won the first set in a tiebreaker, the Spaniard came storming back to clinch the next three sets and take the match. Alcaraz, who struggled with his forehand game in the initial few games, was able to regain his mojo and once he was able to do that, life became extremely tough for Medvedev.

Defending champion Alcaraz will now face seven-time Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic in a repeat of last year’s final. The Spaniard had then come from a set down to defeat the 37-year-old and lift his maiden Wimbledon title, a feat he will hope to repeat at the Centre Court come Sunday.
