Wimbledon 2024 saw a new champion in women’s singles for an eighth consecutive edition.
July marks the start of the Summer in London, and everyone suits up to witness some high-octane tennis action at the Southwest area of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon. The Wimbledon 2024 was no different with the players showing exhilarating tennis in the first two weeks of the Championships.
The event saw the home team hero Andy Murray bid adieu to the game. There were also many more surprises with Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard becoming the first lucky loser to advance to the Wimbledon fourth round since 1995. In the last 29 years, this season was also the first Wimbledon without any of the Williams sisters.
The ladies’ competition threw even more surprises as only one of the top six players survived the fourth round. Defending champion Marketa Vondrousova was ousted in the first round as well. With this and much more, let’s look at the five shocking results from this year’s competition.
#5 Barbora Krejcikova’s wins over Elena Rybakina, Jelena Ostapenko and Danielle Collins
When the seeds and the draw for Wimbledon 2024 were announced, no one would have predicted Barbora Krejcikova to win the title. Despite being a Grand Slam winner at Roland Garros in 2021, the Czech player wasn’t a favourite as she was seeded 31st. She was handed a tough draw but she shocked one opponent after another with top performances.
Krejcikova first defeated 11th seed Danielle Collins in the fourth round and then followed it with a win over the 13th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals. However, her biggest win in the Championships came against the fourth-seeded and tournament favourite Elena Rybakina in the semis.
Then there was no stopping the 28-year-old as she defeated Jasmine Paolini in the finals to win her second Grand Slam and move into the top #10 of the rankings.

#4 Defending champion Marketa Vondrousova knocked out in first round
Winning a Grand Slam is no mean feat and being an unseeded player Marketa Vondrousova created history in 2023 when she became the first unseeded singles player to win the title. This year saw yet another history as the Czech Star became the second-ever defending champion after Steffi Graff, to lose in the opening round of the Wimbledon.
The result came in as a shock as Vondrousova was one of the outside title favourites and was seeded sixth for the event. Maneiro Jéssica Bouzas, the World No. #83 was the reason behind this upset in the first round.
#3 Taylor Fritz’s win over Alexander Zverev
Taylor Fritz upset fourth seed Alexander Zverev at Wimbledon, winning 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-3. Fans witnessed one of the great matches of this year’s competition as the American mounted an incredible comeback from two sets behind.
Fritz, the 13th seed, appeared to be heading home as Zverev’s unrelenting serve was a joy to watch. But he broke the German to take the third set. In fact, it was the first time the previous world number two had been broken in the tournament. Fritz, however, went down in the next round to Lorenzo Musetti.

#2 World No. #1 Iga Swiatek’s loss against Yulia Putintseva
The 2024 season has been unstoppable for Iga Swiatek, with her winning five tournaments—including a record-tying fourth French Open crown. Although Swiatek has dominated the clay courts, her past struggles in the grass courts was of interest to fans as they hoped to see if she can maintain her form there.
As irony had it, the World No. #1 faced Yulia Putintseva, who has been on an unbeaten run in the Grass courts. The Polish star won the first set, but Yulia with her powerful backhand crosscourt shots proved decisive for the five-time Grand Slam winner as Swiatek was knocked out in the third round.
#1 Lulu Sun’s wins over Qinwen Zheng and Emma Raducanu
Wimbledon 2024 was a tournament of the qualifiers, with many players making a lasting impact. The biggest of them all came from New Zealand’s Lulu Sun. The Kiwi star was placed in the bottom half and was scheduled to play the eighth-seeded Zheng Qinwen, the 2024 Australian Open finalist, in the first round.
She came back from a set down to beat the Chinese 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. The next two rounds were equally difficult, and her fourth-round opponent was the 2021 US Open champion, Emma Raducanu. The Kiwi won the first set 6-2 in a jiffy, but her Britain opponent came back strongly and won the second set.
Lulu Sun showed her class to win the next set. Having arrived at Wimbledon without winning even a game at Grand Slams, the Kiwi-star qualifying for the quarters was a shocker for the fans.
