Swiatek and Kenin face off in their third career meeting in the opening round of Wimbledon 2024.

World No. #1 Iga Swiatek, who is yet to play on grass this year, is in a section of the draw packed with fellow Grand Slam champions and significant foes. Wimbledon success eludes the Pole, where she is yet to make it past the quarterfinals.

The top seed is on a 19-match winning streak and has won all three of her previous finals in Madrid, Rome and Paris. She now sets her sights on her fourth straight title and a rare Roland Garros–Wimbledon double. The last player to win the French Open and Wimbledon titles in the same year was Serena Williams in 2015. The legendary German Steffi Graff pulled off the feat four times in her career (1988, 1993, 1995, 1996).

She will open against Sofia Kenin for the second time this year since winning against the 2020 Australian Open titlist in the first round at Melbourne in January. Swiatek leads the field in the race to the WTA Finals and, at 7335 points, is nearly 3000 points clear of second-placed Aryna Sabalenka.

Swiatek is a natural on clay and is likely to be out of her comfort zone at Wimbledon 2024. That is something she will have to deal with as the tournament progresses if the Pole is to add the Wimbledon 2024 trophy to her collection. The Pole’s path to the final is paved with no less than four Grand Slam winners.

Potential challengers in the singles draw for Swiatek include Angelique Kerber, Jelena Ostapenko and Marketa Vondrousova, all Grand Slam champions. Angelique Kerber won the Wimbledon title in 2018, Jelena Ostapenko is the 2017 Roland Garros winner, and Marketa Vondrousova is the defending champion at Wimbledon 2024.

Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open winner, is Swiatek’s first-round opponent. The 2022 Wimbledon champion, Elena Rybakina, is also in the same part of the draw as Swiatek and Vondrousova.

The Pole can take heart from her performance last year, overcoming a gritty performance by Belinda Bencic in the fourth round that saw two tiebreaks in the three-set affair.

Sofia Kenin rediscovered some of her form at last year’s Wimbledon, having made her way through qualifying and reaching the third round. The American knocked out World No. #7 Coco Gauff in the first round. She followed it up by defeating a top 100 player – Xinyu Wang in the second round.

Head-to-head records

Matches – 2

Iga Swiatek – 2

Sofia Kenin – 0

Swiatek maintains her 100%-win record against Sofia Kenin, overcoming the American in both meetings. It was their 2020 meeting in the French Open final that gave Swiatek her first of five Grand Slam wins.

Where and how to watch live streaming and TV broadcast of Iga Swiatek vs Sofia Kenin, Wimbledon 2024 first-round match in India?

The first-round face in the 2024 edition of The Championships between Iga Swiatek and Sofia Kenin will be available on Star Sports network and Disney+Hotstar.

Prediction

Iga Swiatek decided not to play at a warmup event on the grass before Wimbledon, looking to rest after her clay court season dominance. Swiatek has been handed a tough draw at SW19 and is seeded to meet Marketa Vondrousova in the last eight, followed by a possible match against Elena Rybakina in the last four.

The Pole will need to be at her very best during the Wimbledon fortnight, as her opening-round opponent, Sofia Kenin, is a Grand Slam winner herself.

Swiatek is only 9-4 in Wimbledon, against her 35-2 record at Roland Garros. Still, the Pole has what it takes to win, having claimed the junior title in 2018. It will be Swiatek’s trophy to lose at the most prestigious slam in the world. If her form this year is any indication, we are in for another clinical performance from the World No. #1.

Result: Iga Swiatek to win in straight sets.
