Jannik Sinner prevails in a tough second round against Matteo Berrettini in an all-Italian duel.

Italian Jannik Sinner earned a hard-fought second-round victory against countryman Matteo Berrettini at the ongoing edition of Wimbledon. Sinner got the better of the 2021 finalist to win 7-6(3), 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(4) in a captivating face-off. Berrettinni blinked first in the opening set tiebreak, losing four crucial points when leading 2-1, before giving away the set with an error while attempting a forehand volley.

Their second career meeting took three hours and 45 minutes to complete, wrapping up just about thirty minutes before the traditional 11 PM curfew. The top seed overcame the 28 aces and 65 winners unleashed by Berrettini to win their second career meeting. Sinner continues his mastery over Italians and maintains a flawless record of 14-0 against his countrymen.

Sinner’s third-round rival, Miomir Kecmanovic, had a battle of his own to deal with on Court 17 against Tallon Griekspoor. The unseeded Kecmanovic ended the No. 27 seed Griekspoor’s Wimbledon journey with a five-set win. Griekspoor crashed to a 4-7, 7-6(7), 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 defeat after spending nearly three hours on court.

Jannik Sinner vs Miomir Kecmanovic Preview

Every match triumph brings the ATP World No. 1 Jannik Sinner closer to his 50th win of the season, and he is currently on 40-3. The top seed has won four titles this season, including at Halle—his debut win as World No. 1. His likely rival for the 2024 Wimbledon trophy, Carlos Alcaraz, has won two ATP titles this season.

Miomir Kecmanovic and his third-round Italian rival have spent considerable time on the court over two rounds while overcoming their opponents. Kecmanovic has been on the court for a little under six hours, and in the case of Sinner, it is closer to seven hours courtside.

Before arriving in London, Sinner picked up the trophy at Halle, while Kecmanovic made it to the quarterfinals at Eastbourne. Next up for the duo will be 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist Denis Shapovalov or World No. 80 Daniel Altmaier.

A possible third face-off in the ongoing season against Daniil Medvedev looks like it will be in the quarterfinals. Sinner got the better of the Russian in the Australian Open final and again in the ATP Masters 1000 Miami semifinal. Medvedev is up against Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round, against whom he leads 5-1 in their career head-to-head.

Prediction

Miomir Kecmanovic’s best-ever result at Wimbledon is reaching the third round in 2022, while his best overall result at a Grand Slam is his fourth-round appearance at the Australian Open the same year. Sinner is the current Australian Open champion and a semifinalist at Wimbledon last year.

The Next Gen ATP Finals semifinalist from Serbia’s win-loss at SW19 stands at 6-4. Sinner is at 11-3 on the grass courts of Wimbledon and made the quarterfinals in 2022 in his second main draw appearance.

Sinner is 4-0 in finals, while Kecmanovic is looking to make his first title round of 2024. Driving home the Italian’s advantage in their upcoming game is his 7-0 winning streak on grass this season, while Kecmanovic trails at 4-3.

Given Sinner’s current form, Kecmanovic may find the Italian’s game a rather tall mountain to climb.

Prediction: Sinner to win in four sets.
