Two former French Open champions face-off in the last eight.

Jelena Ostapenko overcame Yulia Putintseva, ending her Cinderella run at Wimbledon 2024 with a 6-2, 6-3 score in 68 minutes to reach her third Wimbledon quarter final. It was a tame exit for Putintseva, who had sent World No. #1 Iga Swiatek crashing out of the tournament the before the quarter-final stage for the fourth time. World No. #35 Putintseva also had won the title in Birmingham, a grass court event two weeks ago and was on an eight-match win streak.

Ostapenko produced 29 winners and converted 5 of 6 available breakpoint opportunities to get ahead of Putintseva, 3-2 in their head-to-head.

Ostapenko, the 13th seed, will play another Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova in the last eight.

Barbora Krejcikova began her 2024 season with a quarter-final run at the Australian Open. Following this, the Czech, affected by a back injury, won only three matches between February and June. Krejcikova has now reached her second quarter-final of the season at Wimbledon

The 28-year-old from the Czech Republic scripted a 7-5, 6-3 victory, taking one hour and 42 minutes to dispatch Miami Open winner Danielle Collins. The No. #11 American was at the receiving end of 20 winners while making far too many unforced errors (36) to progress any further in the grass-court major. Kerjeckova’s fourth-round win was her first against a top-20 player of the season.

Jelena Ostapenko vs Barbora Krejcikova  preview

Two former French Open champions, Jelena Ostapenko and Barbora Krejcikova, will walk onto the court for their quarter-final match on Wednesday. It will be their first match in a year. Ostapenko was the winner at Roland Garros in 2017, while Krejcikova was crowned French Open champion in 2021.

The Czech reached the quarterfinals twice at the Australian Open (2022, 2024) and once at the US Open (2022), making Wimbledon the last major in which she reached the last eight. Her best effort at SW19 was in the fourth round in 2021, where she fell to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty.

The likely opponent for either Ostapenko or Krejcikova in the semi-final would be 2022 titlist Elena Rybakina. The Kazakh is favoured to win, and the number four seed is the only remaining among the top ten seeds at the event.

Wimbledon 2024 is guaranteed to have a new semifinalist, as none of the quarterfinalists from the draw’s bottom half have reached the last eight before.
