Lulu Sun started her 2024 Wimbledon campaign with victory against a top 10 player.
New Zealand’s Lulu Sun has become one of the most talked-about topics in the tennis world recently. The New Zealand-Swiss tennis player made her way into the main draw at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships as a qualifier.
She defeated Miriam Bianca Bulgaru, Gabriela Andrea Knutson and Alex Eala in the qualifiers. Later, she pulled off an upset on the first day of the 2024 Wimbledon by defeating World No. 8 Qinwen Zheng in the first round.
She defeated Ukraine’s Yulia Starodubtsewa and China’s Zhu Lin in the second and third rounds respectively. However, she stole the limelight after she stunned home favourite Emma Raducanu in a three-set thriller on Centre Court on Sunday. Against the Brit, she made 50 winners, which is the highest in the women’s singles event at the 2024 Wimbledon.
Continuing her brilliant form, she will face Donna Vekic in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon 2024 on Tuesday. Taking a look at her personal life, Sun was born in Te Anua, New Zealand, to a Croatian father and a Chinese mother. She moved to Switzerland at the age of five. As a result, she has dual nationality.
Sun also has an older sister, Phenomena, who plays tennis for Switzerland. Sun represented Switzerland as a junior. Interestingly, she also finished as a runner-up in the 2018 Australian Open Girls Doubles event. Lulu Sun won her first big ITF title at the Saint-Gaudens Open, partnering Fernanda Contreras in doubles in May 2022.
She also made her WTA main draw debut in the same month at the Morocco Open after she received a wildcard. Sun made her Grand Slam debut at the 2024 Australian Open, where she lost against Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the first round.
She also played at the Dubai Tennis Championships in February, where she was eliminated in the second round by Jelena Ostapenko. However, she entered her prime at Wimbledon. Sun is currently in the quarter-finals of the championships, and she has become the second-lowest-ranked player (#123) after Serena Williams (#181) in 2018 to get this far.
