Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic in a five-set marathon last year to win his maiden Wimbledon title.
Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has a golden opportunity to complete his Channel Slam this year by defeating his Wimbledon title.
Winning the French Open and later the Wimbledon Championships in the same year is known as a Channel Slam. The feat is difficult to complete because tennis players have to play on two different surfaces in less than a month. Clay courts are considered slow, while the grass at Wimbledon is fast.
Both surfaces are preferred by different types of athletes, and it depends on numerous different factors. Before 2015, the two Grand Slams used to take place only two weeks apart. In addition to that, in 2024, players will return to Stade Roland Garros for the Paris Olympics after the conclusion of the Wimbledon Championships.
Only five male tennis players have managed to complete the milestones. Australian tennis legend Rod Laver was the first tennis player to complete a Channel Slam in the open era when he achieved the feat in 1969.
The Team Europe captain at Laver Cup and six-time French Open champion Bjorn Borg has completed the Channel Slam three times (1978, 1979, and 1980) in consecutive years. After almost three decades, Carlos Alcaraz’s Olympic doubles partner Rafael Nadal became the third male tennis player to complete the milestone in 2008, after he defeated Roger Federer in a thrilling five-set final.

Rafael Nadal has accomplished the milestone twice (2008 and 2010). On the other side, due to Nadal’s dominance in the French Open, Roger Federer (2009) and Novak Djokovic (2021) have completed the Channel Slam only once.
Thus, Carlos Alcaraz, who completed his Surface Slam by winning the 2024 French Open last month, has a golden opportunity to complete a Channel Slam by defending his Wimbledon title.
