Aryna Sabalenka is a two-time defending champ at Wuhan.

The WTA Wuhan Open 2024 is the last 1000-level event on the women’s tour this season. A Highly favoured Aryna Sabalenka fell at the quarter-final stage last time and will be eyeing a three-peat in Wuhan to erase memories of that loss.

World No. #2 Sabalenka is the top seed and won the event back-to-back in 2018 and 2019 before a Covid-enforced break took hold. The Wuhan is back on the calendar for the first time since 2019, with the Belarusian eager to continue her dominance at the venue.

The tournament, in its seventh edition, features 16 of the top 20 players in the WTA Singles Rankings. Main-draw matches began on Monday, October 7th, at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center.

The top eight seeds, including Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini, Coco Gauff, Zheng Qinwen, Emma Navarro, Barbora Krejcikova and Daria Kasatkina, received a bye into the second round.

Gauff took on Karolina Muchova in the China Open final after they prevailed against Paula Badosa and Qinwen Zheng. This was Gauff’s first final since January in Auckland. Both women were playing their first China Open final, with the American coming out on top, winning 6-1, 6-3 in 76 minutes.

The win in Beijing saw Gauff climb back into the top five of WTA rankings as the World No. #4, besides winning the second WTA 1000 trophy of her career. Losing Beijing semifinalists, Qinwen Zheng and Paula Badosa will also be keen to get their campaign back on track. Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva can, too, be counted upon to bring their best to the Wuhan Open.

Sabalenka leads the top half of the draw, while Pegula anchors the bottom half. Giving Sabalenka company in the draw’s top half are Coco Gauff, Emma Navarro and Daria Kasatkina. Pegula finds herself in the midst of some tough competition – Jasmine Paolini, Qinwen Zheng and Barbora Krejcikova.

Some of the familiar names sitting out the event include Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur, Danielle Collins and 2017 champion Caroline Garcia.

On the doubles front, Veronika Kudermetova, who won the doubles along with Yingying Duan last season, returns with Hao-Ching Chan to defend her title. The duo are seeded sixth. Duan and Kudermetova defeated Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka for the doubles title last season.

Also in the fray are top-seeded pair and Wimbledon 2024 doubles finalists Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe. Also present are Italians Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, seeded fourth in the event. The two Italians snagged the women’s doubles gold in the Paris Olympics, besides picking up titles at Linz and Rome this season.
