Only Petra Kvitova has won the Madrid Open three times.

The Madrid Open has been one of the most difficult tournaments to dominate on the WTA tour. Only Petra Kvitova has won the title three times while also playing the most number of finals, four. However, unlike a few other WTA 1000 events on the tour, the Madrid Open is relatively new, starting in 2009.

As a result, when the tournament started, players such as Serena Williams, Martina Hingis, Justine Henin, Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters, and more were already on the wrong side of their 20s. Although some players have managed to win the tournament at a young age, Madrid has yet to see a teenage champion.

On that note, let’s take a look at the top five youngest women’s singles players to win the Madrid Open.

5. Aravane Rezai: 23 years, 1 month and 30 days

The only French woman to win the Madrid Open, Aravane Rezai enjoyed a memorable campaign in the Spanish capital in 2010. Defending champion Dinara Safina suffered a first-round exit, while Serena Williams lost in the third round to Nadia Petrova. Unseeded Rezai defeated Justine Henin, Klára Koukalová, and Andrea Petkovic to reach the quarterfinals.

Jelena Janković lost to Aravane Rezai in straight sets. In the last four, the former French tennis star faced Lucie Safarova, but she was forced to withdraw halfway due to an injury. She was up against the fourth seed, Venus Williams, who also lost 6-2, 7-5.

4. Dinara Safina: 23 years and 20 days

Dinara Safina won the inaugural edition of the Madrid Open after beating Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki in the final. Safina was seeded first in the event, and Serena Williams was expected to be her biggest competitor. However, the former American tennis star had to withdraw from the event in the first round due to a knee injury.

In her first match, she beat China’s Li Na and later stunned Lucie Safarova to secure a berth in the quarterfinals. In the last eight, she defeated Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine and then had no trouble winning 6–4, 6–4 against Patty Schnyder.

Dinara Safina faced her only seeded opponent, Caroline Wozniacki, in the final and was crowned the first women’s singles Madrid Open champion.

3. Aryna Sabalenka: 23 years and 3 days

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka won her first Madrid Open title against Australia’s Ashleigh Barty in 2021. She won the title only three days after turning 23. Seeded fifth, Sabalenka faced Daria Kasatkina, Jessica Pegula, Elise Mertens and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to reach the final at the Manzanares Park Tennis Centre.

Maintaining her top form, she faced top seed Ashleigh Barty in the final, and the match stretched to three sets but ended in favour of the two-time Australian Open champion, 6–0, 3–6, 6–4.

2. Iga Swiatek: 22 years, 11 months and 5 days

Iga Świątek became the second youngest player to win the women’s singles event at the Madrid Open after she defeated two-time champion Aryna Sabalenka in the 2024 final. The Polish tennis star ended as a runner-up in 2023, losing 6–3, 3–6, 6–3 to Sabalenka. Nevertheless, she completed the redemption by a three-set triumph over her arch-rival in the 2-24 Madrid Open, 7–5, 4–6, 7–6 (9–7).

On her way to Roland Garros 2024, Swiatek was unstoppable. She won the Madrid Open, the Rome Masters and the French Open. Additionally, Sabalenka and Świątek became the first pair of players to contest consecutive finals at the tournament since the inception of the women’s event in 2009.

1. Petra Kvitova: 21 years and 2 months

Petra Kvitova is the youngest player to win the women’s singles event in the Spanish capital. She made the record in 2011, when she defeated Victoria Azarenka in the final, 7–6 (7-3), 6–4.

She’s also the most successful female player in the women’s singles event with three titles. At 21, she displayed her prowess and captured the title over Li Na, Caroline Wozniacki, and Vera Zvonareva.
