A thigh injury has cost India one of its most experienced doubles players just days before a career-defining tie. Yuki Bhambri will not take the court when India face South Korea in the Davis Cup 2026 qualifiers on September 18 and 19, forcing a late scramble in the team’s doubles setup.
It also marks the first time India have reached the second round of Davis Cup qualifiers since the format changed back in 2019, and a win in Seoul would send the team straight into the Final 8 in November.
India have come close to Davis Cup glory before, finishing runners-up in 1966, 1974 and 1987, but a title has always slipped away.
Bhambri’s fitness had been shaky for weeks. He strained his right thigh right before stepping out for his opening match at the US Open, and the injury never fully settled down in time for Seoul. Captain Rohit Rajpal confirmed the setback himself.
“Yuki Bhambri is not doing too well with his thigh and may not be available to play the Davis Cup. So, we are working on that area to see what our combination is going to be, which we shouldn’t be doing actually during the week before the Davis Cup. But unfortunately, we are having to do that,” India captain Rajpal said.

Losing Bhambri hurts because his partnership with Dhakshineswar Suresh clicked so well in the previous round, where the duo helped India get past the Netherlands in Bengaluru. Their games complemented each other almost perfectly, something Rajpal explained in detail.
“Last time I played Yuki and DK because Yuki’s big strength is his return from ad-court. And that is the weakness for DK. And Yuki’s serve is his weak point and DK has a huge serve. This opposite combination made them a very formidable pair,” Rajpal said.
Replacing that chemistry won’t be easy, but N Sriram Balaji has emerged as the frontrunner. He recently cracked the world’s top 50 in doubles, sitting at 49th, and Rajpal has made it clear where his trust lies.
“Bala is playing very, very well. He is going to be the anchor for doubles this time. And as you know, he has yesterday broken into the top 50 in doubles,” Rajpal said.
Two more names are in the mix. Niki Poonacha, who has already claimed six ATP Challenger doubles titles this year, is still stuck waiting on visa clearance, while Anirudh Chandrasekar, a left-hander, has already touched down in South Korea from New York.
