Born on January 21, 1997, in Halle, Germany, to Georgian parents, Topuria’s upbringing spanned three countries. His family relocated to Georgia when he was seven, where he took up Greco-Roman wrestling.
At 15, he moved to Alicante, Spain, where he began training in martial arts at the Climent Club, and the “El Matador” identity was born. He turned professional in 2015 and has been perfect ever since. He holds dual Georgian-Spanish nationality and represents Spain in competition.
Ilia Topuria’s UFC Career Highlights
Topuria made his UFC debut in 2020 and won all eight of his fights before earning a featherweight title shot. He stunned the MMA world at UFC 298 in February 2024 by knocking out Alexander Volkanovski in the second round to claim featherweight gold.
He defended the belt by finishing Max Holloway in the third round at UFC 308 in October 2024, then vacated the featherweight title to pursue lightweight gold. He won the vacant 155-pound belt stunningly at UFC 317 in June 2025, knocking out Charles Oliveira in round one to become the first undefeated two-division champion in UFC history.
