Jon Jones is back making headlines & it’s for all the wrong reasons!

Former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Jon Jones is once again in legal trouble, just as his retirement from MMA is making headlines.

According to a report from the Albuquerque Journal, the 37-year-old has been charged with a misdemeanor for allegedly leaving the scene of a car accident that occurred earlier this year in New Mexico.

Court records obtained by MMA Fighting confirm that Jones was formally charged on June 17, though the incident in question dates back to February 24.

The case involves a car crash where a woman, reportedly found in the passenger seat of one of the vehicles, was described by police as heavily intoxicated and “lacking clothing from the waist down.” She later told officers that Jones was the one driving and that he fled the scene on foot.

The woman claimed she had been at Jones’ house earlier that day, where she consumed alcohol and mushrooms.

She also said she had to change clothes while there but had no memory of the events between leaving Jones’ house and the crash.

In the immediate aftermath of the accident, the woman called Jones. A police aide who answered the phone reported that the man on the line, believed to be Jon Jones, was slurring his speech and “implied he could use lethal force through third parties.”

When a police officer spoke with him directly, Jones reportedly made vague “allusions to violence” and refused to confirm his identity.

Jones later claimed he was not involved in the crash, stating the woman had left his home intoxicated and called him after the accident.

He also told police he became suspicious when the person who answered the phone used “unprofessional language,” which led him to question their legitimacy. Records show Jones called the woman’s phone 13 times between the time of the crash and the following morning and sent her multiple text messages.

The criminal summons was officially filed on June 17 in Metropolitan Court, and Jones has been ordered to appear for a bond arraignment on July 24. It remains unclear why the charge was not filed sooner.

This news comes just as Jones announced his retirement from the UFC over the weekend, stating that the decision came after “a lot of reflection.”
