The UFC returns to Philadelphia this weekend with two championship bouts on the line, headlined by welterweight king Islam Makhachev putting his title on the line against surging Irish contender Ian Machado Garry at the Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Makhachev enters the fight riding a historic run. The 32-year-old Russian, who previously held the lightweight title through a record four defenses, moved up to welterweight and dethroned Jack Della Maddalena via decision at UFC 322 last November.
With that win, he tied Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history, and he now looks to make the first defense of his new title.
Standing across the Octagon is Ian Machado Garry, the division’s number 2 contender. The 28-year-old owns a 17-1 record, with his only promotional loss coming against Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310. Garry rebounded from that setback with statement wins over Carlos Prates and former champion Belal Muhammad, and a win over Makhachev would deliver him his first UFC gold.
The co-main event is also a title fight, with women’s strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern defending her belt against Gillian Robertson. Elsewhere on the card, Mansur Abdul-Malik meets Dustin Stoltzfus, and Edson Barboza takes on Esteban Ribovics.
