Former teammates reignite bitter feud after Poirier’s arrest.

The long-running rivalry between former UFC stars Colby Covington and Dustin Poirier took another ugly turn this week after Poirier’s arrest for alleged public intoxication became public.

According to a report from TMZ Sports, Poirier was arrested in Georgia on Sunday, which coincided with Father’s Day. The former interim UFC lightweight champion was booked on a misdemeanor charge of public drunkenness at approximately 6:38 p.m. before being released later that evening.

Details surrounding the incident remain limited, and authorities have not publicly disclosed the circumstances that led to the arrest. TMZ noted that Poirier had earlier reposted a Father’s Day message shared by his wife, featuring photos of him with his children.

Public drunkenness charges can carry penalties, including fines and up to one year in jail if a conviction is secured.

While many fans expressed concern and support for Poirier following the news, one person who showed little sympathy was former teammate and longtime rival Colby Covington.

ColbyCovington mocks Dustin Poirier on social media

Shortly after reports of the arrest surfaced, Covington took to social media to publicly criticize Poirier. Posting on X, Covington mocked Poirier’s situation while taking a jab at his public image.

“Nothing says role model and family man like being arrested for public intoxication at 37 years old at 6:38 pm… on Father’s Day. Hit me up when you get out the clink @dustinPoirier and I’ll send some RAB Zero to the father of the year,” Covington wrote.

The comments are the latest chapter in a feud that has stretched back years. Covington and Poirier were once teammates at American Top Team, one of the most successful mixed martial arts gyms in the world. However, their relationship deteriorated over time, eventually becoming one of the UFC’s most personal rivalries.

For years, fans speculated about a potential fight between the two former teammates. Despite numerous verbal exchanges and public disagreements, the matchup never materialized inside the Octagon.

Now that both men are retired from active competition, the possibility of settling their differences in a UFC bout appears increasingly unlikely. Even so, Covington’s latest comments demonstrate that the hostility between the two remains very much alive.

Dustin Poirier responds while continuing personal journey

Following the news of his arrest, the former interim Champion issued a brief message through Instagram Stories.

“Love you all. I’m working on myself.” Poirier wrote.

The statement comes months after Poirier openly discussed the challenges he has faced since retiring from professional mixed martial arts.

The Louisiana native retired following a unanimous decision loss to Max Holloway at UFC 318, bringing an end to one of the most respected careers in modern MMA history.

Since stepping away from competition, Poirier has been candid about the emotional and mental adjustments that come with retirement. Last November, he posted another reflective message to fans.

“Been soul searching, I’m making some changes. Blessings on the journey.”

Despite the disappointing circumstances surrounding his arrest, Poirier remains one of the most beloved figures in the sport. Throughout his career, he earned widespread admiration for both his performances inside the cage and his charitable work outside of it.

The 37-year-old delivered memorable fights against some of the biggest names in MMA history, including Conor McGregor, Max Holloway, Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Poirier also continues to maintain a presence within the sport as an analyst for UFC broadcasts. While questions remain about the arrest and what comes next, many fans are hopeful that Poirier’s message about working on himself marks the beginning of a positive chapter moving forward.

Why was Dustin Poirier arrested?
