UFC Fight Night Mexico will highlight talented homegrown fighters!

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has come to Mexico City six times before, and each occasion has been unforgettable. UFC 180 was the Octagon’s debut appearance at what is now known as Arena CDMX, where Saturday’s fight program will take place, with Fabricio Werdum winning the interim heavyweight championship with a flying knee knockout of Mark Hunt in the second round. Seven months later, the Brazilian unified the heavyweight belts by defeating Cain Velasquez via submission.

The following November, Tony Ferguson closed out the show with what was then the biggest win of his career, a unanimous decision victory over former champ Rafael Dos Anjos, and nine months later, future champs Alexa Grasso and Brandon Moreno competed in the night’s final two bouts, with the former defeating Randa Markos and the latter losing to Sergio Pettis.

Next came the event that ended with beers and debris being thrown into the Octagon after the main event between Yair Rodriguez and Jeremy Stephens was halted prematurely due to an accidental eye poke, and last year, the promotion finally returned with a card that saw Mexican fighters perform exceptionally well, right up until the final two fights of the evening.

This weekend, the Octagon returns to Arena CDMX, and the warriors slated to participate will undoubtedly offer excitement, as they usually do.

Brandon Moreno vs Steve Erceg

Former flyweight champion Brandon Moreno faces recent divisional title contender Steve Erceg in what should be an exciting fight to end the night in Mexico City.

Moreno has competed in each of the previous three UFC events held in his home country, but his results have been disappointing. “The Assassin Baby” is 0-2-1 in those three fights, but he comes into Saturday’s main event off a dominant performance against Amir Albazi in Edmonton last November, which reaffirmed his status as one of the best 125-pound fighters.

After opening 2024 by cold cocking Matt Schnell and earning a championship opportunity, Erceg enters his 2025 debut on a two-fight losing streak, having failed to win the title at UFC 301 before being cold-cocked himself by Kai Kara-France at UFC 305 in his hometown of Perth. The mild-mannered Australian is most effective when he works behind his jab and remains fundamentally solid, and it will be intriguing to see if he can replicate that here.

Manuel Torres vs Drew Dober

Manuel Torres and Drew Dober face off in a lightweight co-main event that appears to be set up for a post-fight bonus after the dust settles and the smoke clears.

Torres, a member of Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) Class of ’21, started his UFC career with three straight wins (and three consecutive bonuses) until losing to Ignacio Bahamondes at UFC 306 in September. He has only been to the scorecards once in his career and operates on a “kill or be killed” philosophy, which not only makes him a fan favorite but also assures that something violent will occur every time he enters the Octagon.

Dober, 36, has always been drawn toward grueling matches and nasty battles, as seen by his bloodied struggle with Jean Silva last summer in Denver, his adoptive homeland. Though he’s just 1-3 in his previous four fights, the Nebraska native has been a mainstay in the “Second 15” of the lightweight division for longer than Torres has been in the promotion, and you can bet he’ll be hungry for a road win after losing at home the last time out.
