UFC goes to Vegas for the 99th time

The UFC returns to the Las Vegas APEX for the second weekend in a straight on October 19. This time, the event is highlighted by a middleweight fight.

UFC Fight Night: Anthony Hernandez vs. Michel Pereira is likely the month’s weakest card in terms of star power, but it’s still decent enough. With multiple exciting-sounding fights, this should be a good fight card to watch. Here’s the preview for UFC Vegas 99.

Anthony Hernandez vs Michel Pereira (Middleweight bout)

Originally slated for UFC 306 in September, the UFC has relocated this exciting-sounding middleweight match to this card, and it’s simple to understand why it’s the headliner. Not only are Anthony Hernandez and Michel Pereira now ranked in the top 15 at 185-pound ranking, but they are also on hot streaks and have put up tremendous bouts.

Rob Font vs Kyler Philips (Bantamweight bout)

Rob Font and Kyler Phillips will fight in a three-round fight at a UFC Fight Night. The match is slated to take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Two sources with knowledge of the fight notified MMA Junkie of the booking but requested anonymity because the organization didn’t make an official announcement. But now it is official.

Font (20-8 MMA, 10-7 UFC) looks to end a two-fight losing streak. He has lost four of his last five fights, although only against great opposition such as Jose Aldo, Marlon Vera, Cory Sandhagen, and, most recently, Deiveson Figueiredo. His only win over the time was a first-round knockout of Adrian Yanez.

Phillips (12-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC) enters perhaps his biggest fight to date, following an excellent performance against Pedro Munhoz in March, which he won by unanimous decision. Phillips enters the battle on a three-bout victory streak.

Charles Johnson vs Sumudaerji (Flyweight bout)

Charles Johnson will face Su Mudaerji in a flyweight battle. Interestingly, both guys have 16-6 MMA records, despite Mudaerji having fought in the UFC for four years longer.

That is not the only distinction, however. After an up-and-down start to his octagon career, Johnson is presently on a roll, winning his previous three fights. His most recent bout was a stunning knockout victory over the highly regarded Joshua Van.

Mudaerji, on the other hand, has had his moments, but ‘The Tibetan Eagle’ hasn’t won since 2021. Having said that, both of those losses were by submission, which does not appear to be Johnson’s specialty.

Brady Hiestand vs Jake Hadley (Bantamweight bout)

Brady Hiestand fights Jake Hadley in the bantamweight weight class. Again, this appears to be an equally balanced encounter between two fighters with identical records.

Overall, however, it appears that Hiestand may have an advantage here. Not only is the TUF veteran a deadly finisher both standing and on the ground but he’s also faced and defeated tougher opponents than ‘White Kong’.

Given his submission abilities, Hadley’s best hope may be to get this one to the ground. However, ‘Bam Bam’ should have enough to prevent his takedowns, thus the choice is Hiestand by late TKO.

Darren Elkins vs Daniel Pineda (Featherweight bout)

Darren Elkins will meet featherweight veteran Daniel Pineda. Given his wild tenure and the amount of damage he’s absorbed – no pun intended – Elkins’ survival is a miracle. Surprisingly, he is coming off a win—a submission of TJ Brown a year ago.

Pineda has almost as much experience, having made her debut in 2012. He has never achieved the heights that Elkins attained, but he is a dangerous fighter in all areas.

Matheus Nicolau vs Asu Almabayev (Flyweight bout)

Finally, Matheus Nicolau faces Asu Almabayev at flyweight. This could be a tough test for Kazakhstan’s Almabayev, who hasn’t lost since 2017 and is 3-0 in the UFC.

‘Zulfikar’ is well known for his grappling, but he can also fight on his feet. The main challenge for him is that he has yet to face top-level opponents.

The same cannot be said of Nicolau, who has fought Manel Kape, Brandon Royval, and Alex Perez. The Brazilian is skilled in all areas, but he tends to lose to stronger opponents, including the two aforementioned prior championship contenders.
