Marcin Tybura vs Serghei Spivac
Marcin Tybura and Serghei Spivac, ranked heavyweights, will face off for the second time this weekend in the finals. Tybura, 39, is a fighter who understands who and what he is, and, perhaps more significantly, who and what he is not, and he has used that knowledge to his advantage over the last few years, going 8-2 in his last ten fights. Tybura is well-rounded and astute; an experienced player who understands how to utilize his strengths and exploit his opponent’s weaknesses.
Spivac was on a roll going into his fight with Ciryl Gane in Paris last autumn, but when he couldn’t send the Frenchman to the canvas, his winning streak came to an end, and he hasn’t competed since. His game has greatly improved since their first confrontation, and it will be intriguing to observe how the dynamic shifts in the rematch.
Damon Jackson vs Chepe Mariscal
Damon Jackson and Chepe Mariscal square off in a matchup of featherweight veterans trying to move up the rankings. After two losses in 2023, Jackson rebounded with a courageous, hard-fought victory over Alexander Hernandez the last time out. The Fortis MMA fighter is 6-3 in his second tour of duty with the promotion and marks a significant step up in competition for Mariscal this weekend.
Mariscal continues to surprise and excite at every step, having converted his short-notice call-up into a three-fight winning run. Following victories over Trevor Peek and Jack Jenkins in rapid succession in the back half of 2023, “Machine Gun” won a split decision against Morgan Charriere early this year to demonstrate that he is a fighter to keep an eye on in the 145-pound division.
Danny Barlow vs Nikolay Veretennikov
Danny Barlow, a Dana White Contender Series (DWCS) graduate, welcomes Nikolay Veretennikov, a program alumnus, to the Octagon for the first time in this short-notice welterweight fight.
Barlow won his spot on the roster last season with a knockout victory over fellow CFFC star Raheam Forest, demonstrating his knockout ability. He preserved his immaculate record in his promotional debut in February, defeating Josh Quinlan in the third round, and he hopes to continue his winning streak today.
Veretennikov came up short in his DWCS match against Michael Morales, who has been unstoppable since making his debut on the big stage. He’s gone 3-0 since, with three finishes inside the United Fight League cage, and he’s looking to make the most of his opportunity this weekend against Barlow.
Chris Gutierrez vs Quang Le
Following a late opponent change, veteran bantamweight Chris Gutierrez will meet promotional newbie Quang Le in an interesting addition to Saturday’s main program. Gutierrez, 33, has spent the previous few years in the bottom half of the Top 15, riding an eight-fight undefeated record dating back to his second debut in the Octagon and ending with his UFC 281 victory over Frankie Edgar.
He’s struggled in two of his past three appearances as the competition has been tougher, but he comes here hoping to start his 2024 campaign with a win and the sort of performance that may propel him back up the rankings.
Le takes over for Javid Basharat, with the chance to make an immediate impact in the 135-pound division. The 32-year-old is undefeated in eight fights and has won seven of them under the LFA banner, including two this year.
Yana Santos vs Chelsea Chandler
On Saturday, Yana Santos and Chelsea Chandler will face off in the Octagon as a bantamweight. Santos makes her 2024 debut, looking to snap a three-fight losing run. The 34-year-old former Invicta FC champion is tough as nails and has faced strong opposition her whole career, and she should put Chandler to the test this weekend in Las Vegas.
The Nick Diaz Academy graduate returns for her second outing of the year, following a unanimous decision victory over Josiane Nunes in March. While Chandler’s win advanced her to 2-1 in the UFC and 6-2 overall, it should be noted that the Stockton native missed weight for the fight, making her appearance on the scale on Friday the first barrier she must overcome to continue moving ahead in the division.
Toshiomi Kazama vs Charalampos Grigoriou
Toshiomi Kazama, a Road to UFC finalist, will meet Charalampos Grigoriou, a DWCS graduate, in a bantamweight matchup.
Kazama was defeated by Rinya Nakamura in the bantamweight division at the end of the inaugural RTU season, and he lost to Garrett Armfield in his promotional debut earlier last August. Grigoriou signed with LAW MMA last season after scoring a finish, but he lost a decision to Canadian veteran Chad Anheliger earlier this year, snapping his four-fight victory run.
Karol Rosa vs Pannie Kianzad
Karol Rosa and Pannie Kianzad, bantamweight rankings stalwarts, face off in the prelims, hoping to gain some momentum heading into the dog days of summer. Rosa has had a mixed record since winning four straight fights to start her UFC career, most recently losing a unanimous decision to Irene Aldana at UFC 296. Kianzad arrived in Vegas hoping to end a two-fight losing streak after being submitted by Macy Chiasson at Marcin Tybura’s previous event in March.
