Justin Gaethje survives a war against Ilia Topuria to become the lightweight champion.

Justin Gaethje delivered the performance of his career with a dramatic fourth-round TKO victory over Ilia Topuria to capture the UFC lightweight championship in the main event of UFC Freedom 250 at the White House.

The South Lawn crowd witnessed a brutal five-round war packed into four rounds as both men traded devastating shots throughout the contest. Entering the fight, many expected violence between two of the UFC’s most dangerous finishers, and neither fighter disappointed under the bright lights in Washington, D.C.

Topuria came into the bout as the reigning lightweight champion, while Gaethje carried interim champion status and hopes of pulling off a career-defining upset. By the end of the night, Gaethje stood atop the division after overcoming severe adversity in one of the best fights of 2026.

Round 1

Gaethje immediately established his jab while Topuria pressured forward with leg kicks and heavy overhand rights. The exchanges quickly became violent as both fighters repeatedly landed clean power shots.

Topuria found success attacking the legs and body, but Gaethje’s jab and uppercuts consistently disrupted the champion’s rhythm. The challenger also mixed in powerful right hands that repeatedly snapped Topuria’s head back.

Late in the round, both men unloaded massive combinations during a furious exchange near the center of the Octagon. Topuria answered with crushing body shots, but Gaethje’s cleaner volume and sharper counters narrowly earned him the opening frame.

Round 2

Topuria came out aggressively and immediately targeted Gaethje’s body with relentless pressure. The champion’s punches downstairs visibly hurt Gaethje and slowly began draining the challenger’s movement and explosiveness.

While Gaethje still landed uppercuts and right hands, Topuria’s body work completely changed the momentum of the fight. The champion repeatedly hammered the ribs before finally dropping Gaethje with another brutal body shot.

Topuria nearly secured a finish on the ground after advancing to mount and threatening multiple submissions, including armbars and a mounted triangle choke. Gaethje survived the dangerous sequences, but the dominant round heavily favored the champion.

Round 3

Both fighters showed signs of fatigue entering the third round, but Gaethje regained momentum with sharp jabs and powerful right hands. Midway through the round, he landed a devastating punch that badly hurt Topuria.

Gaethje suddenly began taking over the fight with combinations, knees, and relentless pressure against the cage. Topuria’s face became bloodied and swollen as the challenger continued building momentum.

Despite absorbing several hard counters from Topuria, Gaethje closed the round strongly and appeared fully back in control heading into the championship rounds.

Round 4

Doctors briefly considered stopping the fight between rounds due to damage around Topuria’s eyes, but the champion insisted on continuing. Gaethje immediately resumed his assault with heavy right hands and punishing knees.

Topuria fought back bravely with body shots, takedowns, and clean counters, but the accumulated damage continued affecting him badly. Gaethje repeatedly targeted the injured eye while maintaining relentless pressure.

The challenger closed the round with another crushing knee to the body. Moments later, officials stopped the fight as Ilia’s corner called the fight with Topuria on the stool before Round 5 could begin, handing Gaethje the biggest victory of his career.
