UFC has some big names this week

Saturday night marks the UFC’s 16th visit to London and 30th trip to the United Kingdom, making it the fourth nation — or group of nations, in this case — to reach the 30-event mark, joining the United States, Brazil, and Canada.

Despite the many visits over the Atlantic, it’s been nearly two years since the Octagon touched down at The O2 Arena. Last year’s British adventure took UFC 304 to Manchester, and the promotion has done well to stack the deck with talent from throughout the United Kingdom. & nearby districts, bringing a traditionally crowded festival back to the Thames’ beaches.

Leon Edwards vs Sean Brady

Edwards hopes to keep his spotless UFC record in London as he returns to the Octagon following his unanimous decision loss to Belal Muhammad last summer in Manchester. Prior to that fight, “Rocky” had gone 13 fights without a loss and will be hoping to prove that he is still one of the best 170-pound fighters around.

Brady, 32, is moving closer to a championship shot, having won three straight fights since his only loss against Muhammad at UFC 280. After submitting Kelvin Gastelum at the end of 2023, the Philadelphia native outworked Gilbert Burns in his only appearance in 2024, improving to 17-1.

Edwards was initially scheduled to face Jack Della Maddalena, but he was called up to challenge Muhammad for the championship at UFC 315 in Montreal, allowing room for Brady to come in. This is a totally different fight, since the American wrestles considerably more than his Australian rival, but the expectation and stress on Edwards to demonstrate that his performance in July was merely an off night remains the same.

Jan Błachowicz vs Carlos Ulberg

Jan Błachowicz and Carlos Ulberg square off in this duel of Top 10 light heavyweights trying to establish their spot in the division’s pecking order while a new man sits on the throne.

Blachowicz, a former champion, turned 42 this month and is walking for the first time since introducing Alex Pereira to the division at UFC 291. He lost that fight by split decision and previously fought current titleholder Magomed Ankalaev to a split draw in a championship bout at UFC 282, so while he hasn’t won in his last two fights, the company he’s kept and the closeness of those fights demonstrate the caliber of fighter the Polish veteran is.

There is no hotter competitor in the light heavyweight class than Ulberg, who enters on a division-best seven-fight winning run. After defeating Alonzo Menifield in a frantic 12-second battle in May, the City Kickboxing fighter shown his growth and poise by winning a unanimous decision over Top 10 veteran Volkan Oezdemir toward the end of November in Macau.

Gunnar Nelson vs Kevin Holland

Gunnar Nelson has always been a crowd favorite in London, and he returns for his third consecutive appearance in the city, fighting Kevin Holland in what promises to be an electrifying welterweight bout.

The 36-year-old Icelandic martial artist has won two consecutive fights at The O2, most recently submitting Bryan Barberena at UFC 286. He is 5-1 in UFC London, losing only to Edwards, and 10-5 overall in the Octagon, with all but two of his victories coming inside the distance.

Holland makes his second outing of the year and sixth in less than a year, returning to welterweight in the hopes of snapping a two-fight losing streak. Last time out at UFC 311, he was immediately knocked down and submitted by Reinier de Ridder, and it will be fascinating to see what lessons he learned from that fight, since Nelson is likely to use the same technique.
