Umar Nurmagomedov faces Song Yadong in a clash with title implications at UFC Shanghai.
UFC returns to China for the third time overall and the second straight year, setting up shop at the Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai’s Pudong district for a stacked early-morning card.
Topping the bill is a pivotal 135-pound showdown between No. 3-ranked Umar Nurmagomedov and China’s own No. 5-ranked Song Yadong, with a spot in the bantamweight title conversation squarely on the line.
Nurmagomedov, unbeaten outside his title-challenge loss to Merab Dvalishvili, arrives on the back of consecutive wins over Mario Bautista and former flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo.
The Dagestan product’s wrestling pedigree is among the best in the division, and a statement win over Song would put him firmly back in line for a shot at gold.
Song Yadong, fighting in front of a home crowd, is coming off a submission win over the same Figueiredo at UFC Fight Night Macau in May. “The Kung Fu Kid” has alternated wins and losses over his last several outings but sees this as the biggest opportunity of his career, with a win potentially fast-tracking him to a title shot of his own.
The co-main event features a women’s strawweight clash between former title challenger Yan Xiaonan, China’s first female UFC athlete, and surging Brazilian contender Denise Gomes.
Also on the main card, bantamweights Aori Qileng and Kai Asakura headline an intriguing all-Asian pairing, while Su Mudaerji takes on veteran Alex Perez at flyweight.
