Rain and thunderstorms could impact the historic UFC event

UFC Freedom 250 is set to become one of the most unique events in mixed martial arts history, but weather conditions may play a major role during fight night at the White House.

The blockbuster card will take place outdoors on June 14, 2026, at the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C. While the setting promises an unforgettable atmosphere, hosting fights in an open-air venue also comes with significant risks.

Unlike traditional indoor arenas, outdoor MMA events must deal with heat, wind, rain, and even potential storm delays. For the UFC, however, the opportunity to stage a card at the White House was apparently worth taking the gamble.

The event will feature a stacked lineup headlined by Ilia Topuria defending the UFC Unified Lightweight Championship against Justin Gaethje. Alex Pereira versus Ciryl Gane for the interim UFC Heavyweight title is also expected to headline the historic card.

Washington D.C. forecast shows a possible chance of precipitation during the event

According to Weather.gov and the National Weather Service, the current forecast for Sunday night in Washington, D.C. includes overcast conditions, high humidity, and a strong possibility of rain throughout the evening.

As of Saturday afternoon, the forecast showed a 40% chance of precipitation during the event window, while earlier parts of the day carried up to a 60% chance of showers after 2 p.m. ET. Temperatures are expected to range between 60 and 74 degrees during the card, with light winds between 5 and 12 mph.

The daytime conditions on June 14 are expected to be much hotter. The projected high temperature currently sits near 92 degrees, adding another layer of difficulty for fighters competing outdoors under physically demanding conditions.

The National Weather Service forecast for Sunday stated:

“A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 4pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 4pm and 5pm, then showers and thunderstorms likely after 5pm.”

The forecast further added:

“Increasing clouds, with a high near 92. South wind 5 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.”

Sunday night conditions are expected to improve slightly, though there remains a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight. Winds are also projected to shift northwest later in the evening.

What happens if rain impacts UFC Freedom 250?

The UFC reportedly plans to continue the event if only light or moderate rain occurs. Part of the outdoor setup on the South Lawn includes an overhead canopy designed to help protect fighters, officials, and equipment from manageable weather conditions.

However, severe weather could force delays. Lightning strikes, dangerous winds, or intense thunderstorms would likely pause the event temporarily until conditions become safe for fighters and fans.

Although UFC CEO Dana White generally avoids outdoor venues because of weather concerns, Freedom 250 is not the promotion’s first outdoor event. UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi back in 2010 also took place outdoors and featured Anderson Silva versus Demian Maia in the main event.

That event avoided rainfall entirely but dealt with dry desert conditions and dust storms in the United Arab Emirates. This time around, the UFC may instead have to battle rain and thunderstorms during one of the biggest cards of 2026.

Will UFC Freedom 250 continue if it rains?

Has the UFC hosted outdoor events before?

Yes. UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi in 2010 was the promotion’s first outdoor event and featured Anderson Silva vs. Demian Maia.
