Hangzhou Asian Games 2023 Volleyball Highlights: India thrash Chinese Taipei, through to quarters

The Indian men's volleyball team will face heavyweights Chinese Taipei in the pre-quarterfinals at the Asian Games 2023. India thrashed the lowly-ranked Cambodia 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-19) in their opening match on September 19 (Tuesday) and then beat World No. 27 South Korea (3-2) to top Pool C.

South Korea has been a dominant force in Asian Volleyball, finishing fifth in the recently concluded Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship 2023. A win against them will boost India's confidence for a place in the quarterfinals.

India will be led by veteran Mohan Ukkrapandian who is making his fourth Asian Games appearance. The squad consists of a mixture of youth and experience with Guru Prasanth leading the spikers category. India have participated in all the editions since the 1958 edition in Tokyo, Japan. Meanwhile, the women's events have been part since the 1962 edition in Jakarta, Indonesia.

India has won a total of three medals at the multi-national event (one silver and two bronze medals) at the Asian Games. The first medal came in the 1958 edition when India finished 3rd. In the following edition, India upgraded the colour to silver losing to Japan in a close encounter (2-3). After a span of two decades, India bounced back to win its third medal in the 1986 edition.
