The defending champions suffered their first loss in PVL 2024 after a hat-trick of wins.
Bengaluru Torpedoes defeated Ahmedabad Defenders to end the defending champions’ winning run, while Delhi Toofans beat Hyderabad Black Hawks in the Prime Volleyball League 2024 on February 27 (Monday).
Ahmedabad Defenders face first loss
Bengaluru Torpedoes ended the Ahmedabad Defenders’ winning streak on Monday, beating the defending Champions 17-15, 15-13, 15-13 in the third season of the Prime Volleyball League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Chennai. Thomas Heptinstall was named the Player of the Match.
Bengaluru outmaneuvered Muthusamy’s strategy, as the middle blocker Mujeeb blocked Nandha’s pipe attack. Sethu’s aggressive serves tested the Defenders, but Max Senica’s spikes kept the defending Champions in play. Srajan Shetty and Paulo Lamounier became involved in Torpedoes attacks, while Ahmedabad made a couple of unforced errors to lose their first set of the season so far.
Ahmedabad felt the pressure with Bengaluru’s relentless attacks. Heptinstall and Pankaj Sharma’s play from the outside lines disarmed Bengaluru and kept Nandha relatively quieter. But the Ahmedabad attacker ended his silence with explosive serves and brought his side back to the game. Heptinstall’s lightning serves stunned Ahmedabad as the Torpedoes took control.
Ahmedabad changed tactics and brought in Shon T John. But there was no stopping Heptinstall on the night, who kept hammering powerful spikes. Ahmedabad created chance for a comeback with Nandha and Muthu contributing in defence. As the battle heated up on the court, substitute setter Vyshak Renjith scored a super serve and the Torpedoes picked a stunning victory.
Hyderabad Black Hawks suffer second consecutive defeat
Delhi Toofans added another win to their results column, defeating the Hyderabad Black Hawks 15-11, 13-15, 15-9, 15-11 in a tense battle in the third season of the RuPay Prime Volleyball League powered by A23 at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Chennai on Monday. Santhosh was named the Player of the Match.
Ivan Fernandez’s left-handed spikes proved to be key for Hyderabad and Ashamat Ullah helped with attacking serves. Lazar Dodic’s spikes kept games in balance, but unforced errors started creeping up on Delhi. While Stefan Kovacevic’s blocks were on point, Santhosh started finding his feet with attacks, and earned a Super Point to get Delhi ahead.
Aponza began working his magic in the middle with monstrous blocks, while Ivan kept testing Delhi’s defence with angled spikes. The addition of Anu James in attacks relieved pressure on Santhosh, allowing him to play freely. John Joseph’s block shut the doors on Delhi and the Hawks jumped right back into the contest.
Dodic’s thunderous play from the service line rattled the Hawks, while Hemanth’s incessant attacks kept Hyderabad at par. Service errors hurt the Hawks, while skipper Saqlain’s clever play helped Delhi regain control. Hemanth began firing from the outside line, and the Hawks reopened the door for themselves. But Delhi middle blockers Aponza and Aayush shut the doors tight and the Toofans picked up a gritty win.
