It was another quarter-final heartbreak for Indian men’s volleyball, but this time, there’s real reason to hold your head high. On Friday, September 11, India’s dream run at the AVC Men’s Volleyball Continental Championship 2026 came to an end at the hands of a clearly superior Japan side, who eased to a straight-sets 25-17, 25-15, 25-19 win.
Dragan Mihailovic’s men fought hard, especially in the third set where they refused to go down without a fight, but a shaky start proved too costly against a team ranked sixth in the world. Still, reaching the last eight marks India’s best showing in this tournament since 2019, a genuine sign of progress.
Attention now turns to the Asian Games later this month, where the same group will look to build on this experience.

India’s best finish ever at this tournament happened way back in 2005, when the team reached fourth place at the Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship in Suphan Buri, Thailand.
It is a record that has lasted for more than 20 years. That year was special because it was the first time India ever reached the semi-finals. They played Japan there and lost 0-3. Then came the match for third place, against South Korea, and India lost that one too, 1-3, just missing out on a medal.
Even though the team did not win a medal, one player stood out. Yejju Subba Rao was named the Best Blocker of the entire tournament.
Since 2005, no Indian team has reached the semi-finals again. The closest they got was the quarter-finals in 2013, and the 2019 and now 2026 is the repeat of the same.
There is some good news for the current team, though. Just a few months ago, in June, India won bronze at the AVC Men’s Volleyball Cup in Ahmedabad.

It was the first time India had ever finished on the podium in that event. They won all five of their group matches and then beat the defending champions, Bahrain, 3-1 to take the bronze. Captain Jerome Vinith and attacker Chirag Yadav played big roles in that win.
