What is India's best finish at AVC Men's Volleyball Continental Championship?
India’s best finish came decades ago
India’s men’s volleyball team has a couple of big days ahead of them in Japan. They are playing at the 2026 AVC Men’s Volleyball Continental Championship, and things have not gone their way so far. The team lost its first match to China in straight sets. Now, they take on Iran on Sunday and play New Zealand on September 8.
The match against China was close, even though India lost. It was played at the Kitakyushu City General Gymnasium, with the scoreboard reading 21-25, 26-28, 25-27. India kept fighting in every set and pushed two of the three sets past the usual 25 points. But China is ranked higher, around No. 37 in the world, while India sits at No. 46, and that gap showed up in the final moments of each set.
Sunday’s match against Iran is the hardest one on paper. Iran is ranked No. 19 in the world and has won this tournament four times before. If India wants any real chance of moving forward in the tournament, a good result here matters a lot, especially with the New Zealand match still to come.

India’s best finish ever at this tournament happened way back in 2005, when the team reached fourth place at the Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship in Suphan Buri, Thailand.
It is a record that has lasted for more than 20 years. That year was special because it was the first time India ever reached the semi-finals. They played Japan there and lost 0-3. Then came the match for third place, against South Korea, and India lost that one too, 1-3, just missing out on a medal.
Even though the team did not win a medal, one player stood out. Yejju Subba Rao was named the Best Blocker of the entire tournament.
Since 2005, no Indian team has reached the semi-finals again. The closest they got was the quarter-finals in 2013, and that was 13 years ago now.
There is some good news for the current team, though. Just a few months ago, in June, India won bronze at the AVC Men’s Volleyball Cup in Ahmedabad.
