Prime Volleyball League 2025 features 10 teams, Including new franchise Goa Guardians.
The much-awaited Prime Volleyball League (PVL) 2025 kicked off on October 2 and will run until October 26 at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad. A total of 38 games will be played among 10 franchises in the leagueâs biggest ever season.
With the addition of the Goa Guardians in 2025, the format has changed for this season. 10 teams are divided equally into two groups, and each team will compete in seven games (four from the same pool and three from the other pool) in the league stage.
After the completion of the league stage, the top four teams will advance to the semifinal, followed by the final. So far, three different franchises have clinched a title victory, and it will be interesting to see if the pattern continues.
As the season has begun, letâs take a detailed look at some of the terminologies used in Prime Volleyball League to gain a better understanding of the league.
Unique Terminologies in Prime Volleyball League
Super Serve
A super serve is a unique term used in Prime Volleyball League, which allows teams to garner two points instead of one if the players in the opposition fail to make contact with the ball. The rule rewards the skillful server for successfully landing the ball on the oppositionâs court as the receiver fails to keep the ball in play.
The terminology becomes crucial when both teams are leveled 14-14, and a player successfully executing a super serve bags two points and wins the game for his team.

Super Point
Another special rule introduced by Prime Volleyball League is the super point, which can turn the game on its head. In a traditional volleyball game, every time the ball makes contact with the ground, a team gains one point. However, in PVL, a team has a chance of doubling its points in a similar scenario.
Each team can declare one super point per set, which gives them the chance to race close to or ahead of their opposition. After the declaration, the next rally is worth two points, instead of one. If the team manages to win the rally, they are awarded two points; otherwise, the opposition gains one point. Interestingly, the teams cannot call a super point if they have over 11 points in their kitty.
For example, Team A is trailing 9-12 in the game and calls a super point. If they win the rally, the scoreline changes to 11-12, while it changes to 9-13 if they lose.

15-point sets
The scoring system in Prime Volleyball League is different from the global rules, as the first team to reach 15 points (instead of 25) wins the set. Further, a two-point gap is not required, except when both teamsâ scores are leveled 14-14. However, the games are played in a standard best-of-five format, and the first team to win three sets wins the match.
Time-outs
The game governed by the international volleyball rules allows a team to request two 30-second timeouts per set. Moreover, in a 25-point set, the 60-second technical timeout is automatically granted after the leading team reaches the 8th and 16th points.
Meanwhile, each team can demand a single 30-second timeout per set in PVL. Moreover, there are no technical timeouts granted for any team.
