The Indian National Volleyball Team is set to go up against Indonesia in the semi-final of the AVC Men’s Cup 2026 on Saturday. This is already the best-ever performance for the hosts in the tournament, having finished at the fifteenth spot in their only previous edition in 2023.
The Dragan Mihailovic coached side has won all five of their matches in the campaign till now. They started off with a 3-0 victory against New Zealand, before downing Kazakhstan by a similar margin.
In the third encounter, they lost the first set against Chinese Taipei, before going on to clinch the next three. They then concluded the pool stage again without dropping a set against Bahrain and Australia.
By virtue of this extraordinary run, India has risen to number #42 in the World Volleyball Rankings, their best in over a decade.
Having finished at the top of the Pool A table, they will be going up against Indonesia in the semi-final. The World Number #49 side have been heavily challenged enroute to the knockouts.
After being hammered 0-3 in their first game against South Korea, they secured wins in their next three matches, but not without dropping a set in all of them. In fact, two of them (against Qatar and Thailand) went into the deciding set too.
Considering their red-hot form, India will be favourites in front of the home crowd in Amdavad. However, they wouldn’t want to be complacent, in what is a brilliant chance to give an impetus to a sport which is still finding its footing in the nation.
