The tournament will begin from 5th December to 16th December.

The World Weightlifting Championships 2022 is set to begin from 5th December to 16th December and be held in Bogota, Colombia. The Championships were first scheduled to be held in China but due to the corona outbreak had to be shifted to Colombia. As with other sports, Russia and Belarus are suspended from participating in this event.

The World Championships will be an essential event for all the athletes as this is the first qualifying event for the 2024 Paris Olympics. India is coming into this event with a four-member contingent and all the eyes will be on Mirabai Chanu the 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medallist. Jeremy the youth Olympian along with Saketh has not fully recovered from the injury suffered during the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

China after a 14-month absence from all the competitions will be sending in a 23-member contingent the most along with host country Bolivia. The Asian powerhouse did not participate even at the Asian Championships and will now look to dominate during the World event.

Indian Participation

Mirabai Chanu(49kg), Achintha Sheuli (73kg), Bindhyarani Devi (59kg), and Gurdeep Singh (+109kg) will be the four Indian athletes contesting at the World Championships. India’s hopes will solely be on Mirabai Chanu who is making a return after participating in the Commonwealth Games. She did take part in the National Games but did not have anything to prove there. She bagged a gold medal in the 49kg category in the 2017 edition and shall look to replicate the same form this year too.

The other three weightlifters won medals at the Commonwealth Games and this event will provide them with valuable experience.
