IWF World Weightlifting Championships 2023: Schedule, fixtures, India squad and live streaming details
A six-member Indian contingent will participate in the tournament.
Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia, will be the venue for the IWF World Weightlifting Championships 2023 from September 4 to 17. This competition is one of two compulsory events for athletes who are hoping to compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris, besides the IWF World Cup in Thailand, which will take place in April next year.
At the World Championships, the athletes can secure one of the 10 available spots in each of the 10 weight categories for the Olympics, based on the IWF's Olympic qualification system. The National Olympic Committees (NOCs) can only send up to three male and three female athletes and there's a cap on the number of participants per weight category for the Paris 2024 Games.
As the hosts, France automatically receives four spots - two for men and two for women. They also have the chance to earn two more spots through the qualification process. Additionally, there are six slots set aside - three for male athletes and three for female athletes that give smaller countries a fair shot at their representation in the Olympics.
This brings the total to 120 Olympic spots. However, it is up to the NOCs who will decide which athletes get to represent their country in the Paris Olympics.
