22-year-old lifter, Achinta Sheuli, was caught trying to enter the women’s hostel at night.

In a startling turn of events, Commonwealth Games gold medalist Achinta Sheuli has been expelled from the national weightlifting camp at NIS Patiala following a breach of discipline. The 22-year-old lifter, who hails from a humble background in Deulpur, Panchla, was caught on video allegedly attempting to scale the wall into the women’s hostel late Thursday night.

Sheuli, a promising talent in the 73 kg weight class, had previously set a Commonwealth Games record with a total lift of 313 kg, securing the gold medal in 2022. His achievements include a silver medal at the 2021 Junior World Weightlifting Championships and two gold medals at the Commonwealth Championships. Despite these accolades, his recent actions have led to a severe setback in his career.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF), with President Sahdev Yadav expressing disappointment over the breach and emphasizing the federation’s zero-tolerance policy for such behavior. The Sports Authority of India and NIS Patiala Regional Director Vineet Kumar were promptly informed of the occurrence.

“Discipline seems to be an issue with some of our lifters. It is sad to see such talent lose its way,” Yadav said to Hindustan Times.

“We couldn’t have tolerated such a breach. Unfortunately, such a promising athlete was caught doing this but we couldn’t have taken this lightly,” Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) president Sahdev Yadav further added.

Sheuli’s expulsion marks a significant blow to his Olympic aspirations, as he will no longer participate in the upcoming IWF World Cup in Phuket, a crucial qualifier for the Paris Games. This development echoes last year’s expulsion of Jeremy Lalrinnunga, another Commonwealth Games gold medalist, from the national camp on disciplinary grounds.

Senior coaches have lamented the loss of potential, noting the extensive time and effort invested in Sheuli’s development. His success at the Commonwealth Games was expected to propel him towards greater achievements, but this recent transgression has jeopardized his future in the sport.

It’s a pity that all our hard work has gone to waste. We spent a lot of time and effort on him. His success at CWG should have spurred him to get better,” a senior coach said.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the fine line between triumph and adversity in the world of sports, where talent must be matched with discipline to achieve lasting glory.
