Chanu is chasing her maiden Asian Games medal
India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will look to end her Asian Games medal drought when she competes in the women’s 49kg event in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Wednesday, September 23.
The 32-year-old is a Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist, a 2017 world champion and a three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist. She completed her hat-trick of medals at Glasgow 2026 in July. The Games remain the one major multi-sport event where she has never stood on the podium.
Chanu finished ninth on her Games debut at Incheon 2014 and missed Jakarta 2018 with a lower-back injury. At Hangzhou 2023, she suffered a thigh and hip injury during her clean and jerk attempts, forcing her to settle for fourth place with a total lift of 191kg. She will look to fix that in Aichi-Nagoya.
