Mirabai Chanu is a two-time medallist at World Weightlifting Championships.

The World Weightlifting Championships 2025 will bring together the best lifters from around the globe in Forde, Norway, from October 2 to 11.

India have announced a 14-member contingent, spearheaded by Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu, who will compete in the women’s 48kg category, an event she has long dominated.

This will mark Chanu’s major international appearance since the Paris 2024 heartbreak. She recently returned to winning ways at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2025 in Ahmedabad in August, where she clinched gold.

However, the 31-year-old is no stranger to success on the world stage. She has won the World Championship title in 2017 and a silver medal in 2022. Her biggest challenge in Forde will be the reigning champion Song Gum Ri of North Korea.

Other Indian athletes to watch include Bindyarani Devi, Nirupama Devi and Mehak Sharma, all of whom secured silver medals at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2025.

Harjinder Kaur and Vanshita Verma added to India’s tally with bronze medals, while Lovepreet Singh will compete in the men’s 110kg category after winning bronze in Ahmedabad.

The men’s squad also features Ajith Narayana (71kg) and Ajaya Babu Valluri (79kg), both won gold medals at the Commonwealth event in August.
