India's 15-year-old Preetismita Bhoi smashed world record, wins gold at Weightlifting World Youth Championships

Bhoi set a new world record in the clean and jerk event.

Indian Weighlifters had an excellent outing at the IWF World Youth Championships, winning four medals, including one gold. Remarkably, a world record was also broken by an Indian lifter.

In the women’s 40kg category, 15-year-old Preetismita Bhoi set a new world record in the clean and jerk event. Bhoi lifted 76kg in the clean and jerk, bettering the previous world record of 75kg.

Along with her 57kg lift in the snatch, Bhoi totaled 133kg to win the gold medal. Her total narrowly missed the youth world standard by just 2kg.

It was a 1-2 finish for India in this 40kg event as Jyoshna Sabar took the silver medal. Sabar managed a total of 125kg with lifts of 56kg in the snatch and 69kg in the clean and jerk. Turkey’s Fatma Kolcak won bronze with a 120kg total (55kg+65kg).

Odisha’s Chief Minister congratulated both the athletes, who also hail from Odisha, Patnaik wrote on X, Formerly twitter, “Congratulate #Odisha weightlifters, Preetismita Bhoi and Jyoshna Sabar on clinching gold and silver medals respectively, at the IWF World Youth Championships in Lima, Peru.

“Their sporting achievement has made Odisha and the nation proud. May they keep shining and inspiring young athletes.”

Indian lifters kept the medals coming in the women’s 45kg event. Payal clinched the silver medal with an overall lift of 147kg, consisting of 65kg in snatch and 82kg in clean and jerk. The gold went to Colombia’s Lawren Estrada who lifted a total of 151kg (67kg+84kg) to claim her second world title.

In the men’s 49kg category, Babulal Hembrom secured a bronze medal for India. Hembrom lifted a combined total of 193kg with efforts of 86kg in snatch and 107kg in clean and jerk.
