Despite qualifying for Asiads, Visha Kaliraman will be picked as a reserve member in men's 65kg category
Youngster Aman Sehrawat (57kg) alongside Tokyo Olympian Deepak Punia (86kg) secured berths for Hangzhou Asian Games after winning the wrestling selection trials at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. The major upset was Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Ravi Dahiya not being able to make the cut and few reports suggest he is yet to recover completely from injury.
Maharashtra's Atish Todkar defeated Ravi Dahiya in 57kg in the opening round to create a massive upset. The former had a giant lead (20-8) at one stage and in the end managed to pin down Dahiya ending the proceedings. However, Atish's dream run ended in the semi-finals losing to Rahul. In the end, Asian Championships gold medallist, Aman Sehrawat defeated Rahul (9-2) to book a flight for Hangzhou Games.
In the 65kg category, Vishal Kaliraman emerged victorious in the 17 man field. The category had the likes of Anuj Kumar, Kalkal who objected ad-hoc committee's decision of giving exemption to Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia for qualification to Asian Games. Kalkal and Anuj both were knocked out in the semi-finals with Vishal booking a spot after few hectic encounters.
World Championships 2021 silver medallist Deepak Punia beat Jointy Kumar (4-3) in a tough battle in the final. Sumit Malik after coming off doping ban, booked a spot to the Asiads in the men's 125kg category.
