Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have not been given exemptions for the competition
The adhoc committee has finally announced the trail dates for the World Wrestling Championships 2023. The trials is scheduled to be held on August 25th and 26th in Patiala. The adhoc panel after receiving backlash for exempting Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat from Asian Games trials have not given given exemption to any wrestler for World Wrestling Championships 2023.
In the criteria mentioned for “shortlisting of athletes” for the Worlds, the ad-hoc panel to PTI said, “Medallists and participants of all international ranking series/ Asian/ World Championships/ Commonwealth Games held in 2022 and 2023 and participants of 2022 Tokyo Olympic Games will have to appear for trials in order to get selected selected for the Worlds.”
Initially the adhoc panel decided to conduct the trials by August 10th but later decided that the newly formed WFI committee should take the call for the trials as it would get elected on August 12th. Later the Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed the WFI elections on August 11th and adjourned the matter to August 28 leaving adhoc panel to take over charge.
“Since this is an Olympic qualification tournament, we couldn’t have delayed the trials any further as India’s entries would have been rejected,” the ad-hoc panel head Bhupender Singh Bajwa told PTI
