India has won a total of 23 medals overall in the competition.
India had a total of 22 medals in their possession prior to the commencement of the World Wrestling Championship 2023. Following Antim Panghal's recent bronze medal achievement, the total tally has now reached 23, consisting of one gold, five silver, and seventeen bronze medals. From the tally of 23 medals, nine have been bagged by women.
Among these achievements, only a single medal has been achieved in the Greco-Roman wrestling category. Notably, Udey Chand holds the distinction of being the first Indian wrestler to attain a medal at the esteemed World Wrestling Championships. Chand successfully secured a bronze medal in the men's 67 kg freestyle category during the 1961 championship event held in Yokohama, Japan.
India achieved its second medal as an upgrade when Bishamber Singh clinched the country's first silver at the World Wrestling Championships in the men's freestyle 57 kg category, held in New Delhi in 1967.
Alka Tomar achieved a historic milestone by becoming the pioneer Indian female wrestler to secure a medal at the prestigious World Wrestling Championships. Tomar's extraordinary performance earned her a well-deserved bronze medal in the highly competitive 59 kg category during the 2006 event held in Guangzhou, the People’s Republic of China.
Sushil Kumar holds the distinction of being the sole wrestler to have won a gold medal for India. On the other hand, Bajrang Punia has proven to be a remarkable athlete, securing the highest number of medals for India at the world championships, with a tally of four. Specifically, Bajrang has earned one silver medal and three bronze medals in these prestigious competitions.
Vinesh Phogat stands out as the sole female athlete in the domain of women's wrestling to have achieved the commendable feat of securing two medals. Her initial bronze accolade was attained in 2019, competing in the Women's 50 kg category, followed by her second bronze triumph in 2022, this time participating in the Women's 53kg division.
