India had a winless day 1 at the World Wrestling Championships 2025 in Croatia.
India’s campaign at the World Wrestling Championships 2025 suffered a huge setback after Olympic medallist Aman Sehrawat was disqualified from the men’s 57kg freestyle event for failing to make weight.
The 22-year-old was scheduled to bout against Vladimir Egorov of Macedonia in the first round. However, Sehrawat’s coach, Lalit Prasad, confirmed to Sportstar that the Indian Wrestler had been unwell since arriving in Croatia and therefore they did not appear on the scales.
According to United World Wrestling (UWW) rules, no weight tolerance is allowed at marquee events such as the World Championships or the Olympics. This is in contrast to competitions like the World Cup or UWW Ranking Series, where wrestlers are permitted a two-kilogram leeway.
Aman, who secured India’s only wrestling medal (bronze) at the Paris Olympics, had a strong season leading up to the World Championships.
In July, he won gold at the Yasar Dogu and Vehbi Emre & Hamit Kaplan International, and earlier in the season, he had claimed bronze at the Ulaanbaatar Ranking Series.
India’s campaign at the World Wrestling Championships 2025 in Croatia saw a disappointing start on the opening day on Sunday. Udit, Rohit, and Rajat Ruhal all exited early.
However, Mukul Dahiya emerged as the country’s sole medal hope, earning a spot in the repechage round after his opponent, USA’s Zahid Valencia, advanced to the final.

Dahiya dominated Fateh Benferdjallah of Algeria 11-1 in the first repechage round and followed it with an 11-0 win over Latvia’s Ivars Samusonok to secure a place in the bronze medal match and keep India’s hopes alive.
India also have hopes in women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman events. The former U20 world champion Antim Panghal in the 53kg category, remains one of the brightest prospects to deliver for the country now.
Meanwhile, the experienced wrestler Deepak Punia will compete in the 92kg category, aiming to turn the tide for India.
