The Commonwealth Games 2022 bronze medallist expressed her disappointment at not getting any help from the Delhi Government in the past.
The recently concluded Commonwealth Games saw India have a great outing. India won 61 medals in total, securing the fourth position on the total medals tally. One of the brightest spots in India’s Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign has been the wrestling contingent which won a total of 12 medals, including six gold medals. The wrestlers' performance garnered a lot of praise and affection from the country and abroad. However, the wrestlers haven't just been in the news for the medals they won. Divya Kakran, a bronze medalist, got involved in a spat online with the Delhi government.
Divya Kakran is a 23-year-old freestyle wrestler who was born in the village of Purabliyan, Uttar Pradesh. She has won 60 medals, including 17 gold medals in the Delhi State Championship and has won the Bharat Kesari title eight times.
However, one of the congratulatory tweets and the response to it has been in the news for not-so-good reasons. Divya Kakran’s response to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s tweet praising her has received a lot of attention on social media.
Post Kakran’s victory, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter to acknowledge the athlete’s feat and congratulate her for the same. However, in response Kakran, while thanking him pointed out that she was not given any assistance in the practice or reward by the Delhi govt. Even after her great performance in the Asian Games as well.
She even went on to quote tweet to a similar instance that happened in the past saying it feels like time has took her back to the past.
AAP MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj says the athlete represents UP and not Delhi
AAP MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj was quick to reply to Kakran’s tweet in which she said she never received any form of help or encouragement from the Delhi government. Quoting Kakran, Bharadwaj added screenshots of news reports that pointed to Divya Kakran representing her home state Uttar Pradesh. He wrote on August 7, “The whole country is proud of you sister. But I do not remember that you play for Delhi. You have always been playing for Uttar Pradesh. But the player is of the country. You do not expect respect from Yogi Adityanath Ji. I think the Chief Minister of Delhi will listen to you.
Bharadwaj also added to his former tweet, saying “Maybe I am wrong sister but when I searched, I found that you have always been playing for Uttar Pradesh, not from Delhi State. Today the whole country is proud of you. I pray to God that you go ahead.”
However, Kakran was quick to respond to this when she uploaded her certificates which proved that she had represented Delhi at various levels in the previous years.
It is unclear why Bharadwaj did not approach the sports department of the Delhi Government to check if Divya played for Delhi and used media reports.
AAP gives proof of financial assistance
Retaliating to her statement, the AAP government had said, "The Delhi government respects all sportspersons of the country and prays for their bright future. Currently, Divya Kakran plays for Uttar Pradesh. If she had played from Delhi or she had been part of any sports scheme of the government or she has applied in any such scheme then the government will surely look into it.”
They followed that with tweets that had proofs of cash incentive paid by the government of the Union Territory to the wrestler.
Wrestler accused of being influenced by another political party
After Divya Kakran went to meet the media and tell her story, another AAP MLA Naresh Balyan accused the wrestler of being under the influence of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). He tweeted a picture of the wrestler getting greeted by BJP workers. She responded to the MLA quoting a picture of her with Arvind Kejriwal and explaining that she has been greeted even by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the past.
The drama that has unfold ever since the end of the Commonwealth Games 2022 takes the shine away from all the hard work of the sportspersons at the quadrennial event.
