Vinesh Phogat’s last hope for a Olympic medal at Paris remains with the CAS.

The Paris Olympics 2024 has seen Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat get tangled in controversies. She has now appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to award her the silver medal. The verdict is likely to be announced on August 8.

It has been a tough journey for Phogat over the past few years as her career has been affected by multiple issues. She alongside the Indian Olympic Association will hope that CAS will give out the verdict in her favour.

What is the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)?

CAS is an organization which looks into problems involved directly or indirectly in sports. They handle various cases in the sporting world, it could be related to doping, contracts disagreements or certain decisions taken by sporting organizations.

It is a court for athletes who feel that they have been treated differently or have been part of injustice. CAS takes a case when both parties submit their respective judgements. It has been accessible to athletes worldwide and works for the welfare of athletes or sporting bodies since its formation in 1984.

Why was Vinesh Phogat disqualified?

Phogat had earlier entered the final in women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling. She was set to face USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt in the final. But Phogat was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight, she had failed the weigh in limit. Her weight seemed to be fine on tuesday morning but it was not the same a day later.

As a result, she was placed last in her event and Cuban Guzman Lopez took her place in the final. Lopez had earlier lost to Phogat in the semifinals.

Phogat had undergone rigorous exercise routines to lose weight, but she could not make it. She had to take intravenous fluids to be in a stable condition. IOA’s president, PT Usha and Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, Chief Medical Officer gave their respective statements on the issue. They had met Phogat personally and have assured her of support during these tough times.

Fans and athletes have shown support to Phogat who is under a crisis at Paris Olympics 2024. She had a good start but will now have to wait for the CAS verdict which will determine her fate at Paris.
