Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has guaranteed herself at least a silver medal at Paris Olympics 2024 after advancing to the final of women’s 50kg freestyle category. Her victory in the semi-final guarantees India a fourth medal at these Games.

In a closely contested semi-final match, Phogat defeated Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman with a score of 5-0. The first half of the bout was defensive, with Phogat leading by a single point at the break. In the second half, Phogat successfully attacked Guzman’s leg, scoring four points in quick succession to secure the win.

Earlier in the tournament, Phogat surprised many by defeating two-time Olympic gold medalist Yui Susaki of Japan. In a risky strategy, Phogat remained passive for most of the match before executing a last-minute throw that earned her three points and the victory.

Phogat’s journey to the Olympic final has been marked by challenges both on and off the mat. She has faced conflicts with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) in recent years, making her success in Paris all the more noteworthy.

In the gold medal match, Phogat will face Sarah Hildebrandt. A victory would make her the first Indian wrestler to win an Olympic gold medal.

The final is scheduled for late night tomorrow India time, with Phogat aiming to add to India’s medal tally and make history in the process.
